Hi Sam,
Your bus should have Hella's, not Bosch. _________________ Insta: @kaiscollectionvt

...looking like these HELLA euro headlights, please watch the scripts on the lenses.
Your BOSCH euro headlights are 57-60 bus headlights. |

Seems the clips have been overlooked a little. The smaller one I pulled from my 55 Wolfsburg bus, but see pics of them in barndoor headlights. When did they run to? Only a hella thing or did Bosch also utilise them?
As seen in the 55 manual.

Just to add some new info here
I was disassembling a pair of lights in order to get 4 rings re-chromed.
I have a pair of 9/54 and a pair of 12/54( when I bought these the seller said they were removed from a post bd 55)
I was surprised to find the 12/54 rings were the style of the later bus type as opposed to the earlier style with 2 rolled lips.
So I’m guessing late in 54 they must have changed this detail. Everything else appears the same other than that.
Note the rolled inner lip rings have the embossed arrow and the later style omitted that detail.
Also a better image of complete crazy springs for holding the assembly to the ring itself. 2 used per unit. They suck to remove! Probably even more fun to install.
Another detail I never noticed was that they put a slip of rubber between the ring and the securing tab before riveting them into place(last image)

I have those two Long spring clips on an original Hella 03M (Jan 54) Barndoor headlight I have here.
Thank you guys for all the information on this thread.
It has really helped me put together a pretty correct pair of Jan/Feb 55 lights (Euro spec).
A question…why does the Beetle headlight reflector (111 part number) have an integral deflector/bulb shield, yet the Bus reflector (211 part number) does not? _________________ -StockRocks- |

Question for anyone in the know. Other than not being correct on an early barndoor, is there an advantage/disadvantage to running a sealed beam vs non? |

I spent a lot of time with my father who came of driving age in 1945 in the USA. the cars he first drove were 1936 Chevy and 1937 Ford. both of these had silvered reflectors and replaceable lamps like the early VW's He HATED these things because by the time they came into his hands the silvering was bad and the lights were terrible. He loved the sealed beams because they always had good reflectors. Pretty sure he converted one to sealed beams.
Given that you can find a good service to resilver the reflectors and good lenses, with modern bulbs, even 6 volt bulbs will likely far outperform 6 volt sealed beams. I also prefer the looks of the fluted lenses and for these reasons I will likely convert my 1955 built single cab to period correct European lights. By the way, in the 1960's Dad did buy a BMW R26 motorcycle which had the similar headlights to his prewar US cars. This might be when I learned this from him. _________________ Al Brase

Rereading my previous post, I realized I did not mention that one can likely put in MUCH better 6 volt lamps than those made in the 1950's.
I think there probably are threads going on those choices, but I am looking forward to finding out. I would lean toward HOTTER lamps, not LEDs.
So can anyone recommend reflector RESILVERING services? _________________ Al Brase

Adjusting screw on opposite sides
Rolled edge
No logos.

Looks like a Hella rim for a '67 Bus, passenger side. I think the single rivet rims are '67-only or later replacements. _________________ Thanks,
