Hi all,
Got our Westfalia Champagne bus repainted. Bottom is Agata brown L86Z and top L90D. As I believe that’s what these busses were. Just it appears the L90D came out quite beige with a sort of touch of green in it. Just not sure if it’s optical illusion with the (too) white repainted roof or that it truly is not quite the right L90D and off. I mean I know L90D is pastel white, just it seems CE II’s always seem to be more brighter white than more softer white or like they repainted my bus. The wheels btw are powder coated in RAL 9010. I am considering taking the windows out again and the roof off and have them repaint the top half. Or the roof.
Any opinions or thoughts on if the colors are right for a Champagne Westy or not?

That looks like Pastel White to me.

I agree that it looks like the upper half is the 'wrong' colour but it can be deceiving when colours butt up against each other, they can shift in unexpected ways.
I think it looks fine but I see what you are talking about. How about repainting the poptop a warmer white? _________________ SL |

That looks correct to me. Pastel White is not bright white but more muted. It will look a bit more cream-colored against the white poptop.
This is mine and looks very much like your upper color:

L90D is kind of a "dirty" white. had a 71 westy that color. late buses (not sure of the code) had a different white iirc that was brighter.
honestly the fiberglass gel coat was a shade off so unless it really bugs you i'd say from a mismatch standpoint it's technically correct. _________________

Thanks to the people who responded so far.
@Yellowsplittie, yours looks very similar, but still get the impression mine is more beige than yours. What exact color is your pop top roof?
Hard to see maybe, as I took the pictures in the barn, but it does show a difference on the inside of the bus, in the back where the old and new paint are next to each other.
This is the bus in the barn.
What I found on Ratwell is interestingly enough that there are two L90D’s! The regular one and one called L90/02D. The latter one is more beige with green it appears and the ‘regular’ L90D is more harder white is seems. Or is that just me?
How about this difference and is maybe the harder white the color that is used on later Westfalia busses and the CE II?

Does anyone have any experience with the difference in reality between L90 and L90/02D? As there seems to be a real difference between the two L90D’s. Where does this difference come from and how come Ratwell mentions it? Or how to get the best color L90D and what fits best with a CE II Westfalia bus? _________________ ‘69 panelvan

That's interesting. I had the same issue when comparing Marino Gelb and Marino Gelb 77. Two subtly different shades of the same color.
What does your M-code plate say? That will clarify what the original factory colors were for your bus. _________________ John

The M-Plate says L90D for a CE II, but what makes me curious is if there are busses that truly have the other L90D (L90/02D) as an official color code? And does that cause confusion with paint mixing machines?
As if I would have to choose the color they put on my CE II it is more the 02D version of L90D than the normal one. The 02D appears to be a bit more green than the regular one which seems more hard white due to maybe a touch of blue in it?
Anyone with a paint color mix machine that can select the different types of VW L90D? _________________ ‘69 panelvan

When in doubt have the paint store send out the rep with the camera and shoot an area up under the dash where it never sees the sun. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I went through a long search trying to find the correct formula for Reef Blue. After several failed attempts at code matching the only thing that worked was to take an original part that had never seen daylight or been repainted (the inside of the engine lid) to an automotive paint store with and old guru that could match it by eye.
Good luck with 40 year old paint codes. It didn't work for me. _________________ 1978 Transporter 2.0 FI, BA6

Same - we found that the code for dakota beige - L13A - was a good starting point, but had to mix by eye to get it closer. We matched to paint in the gas tank area.
