I am going through a 67 now and am having an issue identifying the engine. I have looked through various guides and they all indicate there should be a letter stamped in front of the numbers. Mine has none. Can anyone help me identify this engine?

According to Muir, looks like a 1500 Type 3 case

My guess is it is a 1963 40 horse case. |

Yep, originally an October of 1963 manufacture 40hp engine. It wouldn't be a Type 3 case since those had the serial number stamped along the top center, to the right of the oil cooler mount. Yours appears to have likely been rebuilt at least once, so it's hard to say for certain what size it currently is without measuring the bore and stroke. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Thanks for the replies. Eric, Im not sure how to fit it in that list. It jumps from 6 digits in the 811 xxx to letter then numbers. This one has has and extra digit 811 670 8. I also see a faint W6 to the left and below that, but not sure what that is about.
This is in all likelihood rebuilt. I just want to make sure I know what I'm buying parts for when needed. |

With those 7-digits it could be an early '64 T2 model year case. The VIN table does have those case numbers (gap of missing numbers), but they fall in between Jun-Dec '63 production which is the early '64 model year.

The generator stand is definitely not stock as it is labeled in English (Firing Order) instead of German (Zündfolge). Also the black paint over the case is not stock.
Knowing the model year of the case doesn't really help if the engine has been rebuilt. Once rebuilt, the case internals could be almost anything. The only significant internal differences between different year cases:
Dual-relief oil system (came out in the '70s?)*
Oil passage size (matched to oil pump & oil cooler)
Cam bearings (early cases did not use them)
Case material (alloy of magnesium used)*
(*can be determined from external features)
The exterior features of your engine (eg. heads, fan, generator, tin, etc.) could have been added on at rebuild time or afterwards and do not need to be model year specific to the case. _________________ AshMan40

Everything right!
Dual relief oil system came out in the early 70s.
Can bee seen from on the bottom of the case.
Perhaps the case p/n will be useful.
It is on both sides under the holes of the pushrod tubes.

P.S.: Sometime engines of so called "Industriemotor" (for waterpumps for the firebrigade, compressors, emergency generatos) are used in cars after taken out of service. _________________ Being different, or being boring?
