I have purchased this project from Seth. Seth and I are very good friends. I actually discovered this in the woods a mere 30min from my home 6+ years ago but I wasn't able to land on a price with the seller. The seller died of a heart attack and his son sold this to Seth. For years I would ask/tease/mention/suggest that he sell this to me. Seth is a stand up guy who eventually worked a very fair deal with me.

Let the fun begin.

The plan:
It will be stitched together with as much original panels as I can locate and will show all of its scars. It will not get repainted. I am working on sourcing an oval pan with title. It will stay mostly stock and maintain the spirit of an early split, with some minor touches because I simply can't afford to be a purist. If I can find 16s and they are in the budget, he will stand tall, or it will sit on some 66/67 style wide 5's painted silver. Seth nicknamed the car "Stitch" and I like it.

Here it is being moved from Seth's shop in Philadelphia. It is now in Centreville, MD which is about 20min from where it was discovered.

I purchased all of the donor parts that Seth didn't need for his current 52 project.

The donor parts are almost another Beetle! Smile

This lower section is from another split and was moved here from FL. Its an amazing piece of steel and essentially my jig. It was cut in two so I mounted it to a 62 chassis I had so it can be welded back together. You will see I have full A-pillars too, which will be the first job.

Also a nice dry front clip from another beetle

Simple enough, put this onto this.

Speedo is in nice condition. We don't know if its a Hoffmann so for now I will run a KMH speedo.

Sorry I am slacking on updates.
I welded together the lower section and also welded in the A pillar on the passenger side. I've also been collecting a lot of the parts that were missing when I purchased the car 7 months ago.

Assuming I can wrap up some house projects, I expect to make excellent progress this summer.

This is a donor a-pillar. I will final weld it in once I can test fit door, which is pending a new internal frame to be welded so the door can open and close.

I have been slowly gathering parts in between finishing up some side work and some small jobs on my other vws.

A few weeks ago I picked up a titled 55 chassis and front beam which I immediately blasted and primed with help from my friend Seth.
Also picked up a hood handle, pedal assembly, 50 rear apron, and a couple other bits.

I managed to fit the passenger side door and final weld the pillar so its all aligned. I also cut the quarter to match my donor, in preparation for that to be welded.

Slow and steady!

Any updates on this? Have you ordered a Birth Certificate to help determine if it is possibly a Hoffman?

I sold this split to a friend who has made some big progress. And yes he received a birth certificate and found it was a Hoffman delivered on Aug 23, 1950. I can let him update the thread.

I have a feeling he may never update this thread so I thought I would bring it to closure. While restoring this split a good friend offered another Aug 50 split (824 units older) to me and it was much further along. While I had the capability of fixing this split, I just couldn't justify the time spent doing it for me personally, while raising a family. So I sold it to my friend who has a restoration business and the SKILLS to get it done.

Here is how it sits now, and it is in fact a Hoffman which is cool because there were only 326 Hoffmans in 1950. It was crazy to think I owned two of them for a few months.
