With some nice weather here in the PNW, I decided to wash my van and get some of the muck of winter and lockdown lethargy off. I took off the roof rack, ladder and awning, and wow, those are some ugly green stripes that grew in amongst the accessories! A couple of baths with conventional car wash stuff has done very little.
What is the best way to remove the green gunk? Anything that might seem like a good idea that should definitely be avoided?
My van is scruffy enough with patina that I’m not too concerned about getting it to look super sharp. Won’t happen. At the same time, it still has enough paint that it kinda cleans up nice. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Dave: Do you mean chlorine bleach or just "chlorine"? _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

If you have access to a home pressure-/power-washer, it can do wonders for badly neglected Westfalia roofs, without the need for harsh or toxic chemicals.
Here's some more info on cleaning and caring for the Westy roof:

I should reiterate, my van is a Tintop, so no fiberglass. Otherwise I suppose our nautical friends would be the best resource. I just don’t want to end up with bare metal . . _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Well if your tin top looks like Jeffrey's fiberglass top, first thing I'd say is...don't turn your back on it, that's just the opportunity it's looking for! Never works out well for the dudes in the spaceship... _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |
