How rare is a 15 inch wood handle superior "the 500" steering wheel? Thinking about putting it on the old bug but want something semi rare to replace the stock steering wheel.

The Superior Performance Products "500" wheel is not rare, you can find them on ebay almost all the time. Only NOS one's are hard to find. If you do use the Wood style "500" wheel I would use it with a Formula Vee horn button, VWOA did sell the same wheel with the horn button.

I have a Superior "The 500" steering wheel too. However the one I have doesn't have the rivets showing. I haven't seen many of these.

I had a foam 500 on my go cart when I was a kid.
I wish I would have kept the steering wheel. _________________ 65 Bug

Someone just gave me a wooden one with the rivets showing. The chrome part is flat, so maybe they are used on boats too. _________________ 67 Ghia coupe, Retired military.

they are really not that rare. The style was first introduced in about 1962 by either Grant (Glendale, CA) or Covico (Covina, CA), there is some dispute as to who was first. But eventually Grant bought out Covico, had them continue to do some of the work, including dipping the foam and plastic version and also selling them to Ansen (Los Angeles, CA). Superior Performance Products (Van Nuys, CA) pretty much just knocked them off, although some say Grant/Covico was making them for Superior anyway.
Many of the models are still available brand new from Grant, and the metalflake versions are available from Moon. |

Made by Superior sold as a VW Formula Vee accessory.
The Formula Vee Steering Wheel was a simulated woodgrain and the metal was a satin finish not chrome.
Here's a complete NOS Formula Vee Steering wheel kit.

not rare, but cool looking on a vintage "tuned" car; it's not screeming: get the "roll-cage and helmet", like for instance a small momo steering wheel does. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

This one I have does not say "Superior" on it (or anything really), could it be a Covico?
It's hard to see in my crappy picture but the rim is finished in metalflake |

5 holes in the spokes is most likely a early Grant, Covico was 3 holes evenly spaced. |

It looks like it's probably a Grant, then, thank you! Can't wait to see how it looks once in the car |
