Well I see a 73-79 nose, a 72?-79 taillights and are those rounded scoops? Then 68-72.
Wheel bolt pattern is the smaller one, so 71-79.

Thanks, according to the chase number is supposed to be a 69 right?
Maybe at sometime they changed the nose and the taillights .
Any other thoughts, or a way to check whether it is a pre 73 or not? |

The taillight LENSES are later, but the CORNERS are not. Look closely.
The lenses are closer together, and the corner of the metal doesn't have the bulge.

For the international market VW just cobbed all kinds of stuff together, so very likely a factory '79 model.
What engine does it have? Type 1 or Type 4? I don't think much of cutting a hole in the engine room door, great way to suck in hot engine air and combined with dust kicked up by the tires. |

unfortunately the engine has been changed so no idea what it was.
The chase num are 9 digits.
It suppose to be before 1971 |

That's right. If it were a '79 VIN the number would be 239 2 085844 _________________ 1978 Transporter 2.0 FI, BA6

My best guess is the VIN number indicates the correct year. You definitely have an early Bay rear based on the rounded corners, half moon air scoops, etc. Also it is lacking the flare at the tail lights as seen on this late Bay, which indicates someone most likely attached the late bay lens.
*That bus is most likely a 72 based on the bumper, but that’s irrelevant to this discussion.
The front of your bus, aside from the high turn signals, also has the late Bay bumper support, which is interesting. As previously stated, most likely the entire nose was swapped at some point.
To confuse things even further, it appears you have a late bay Westfalia top, which started in 1974, if I recall correctly, but that could have been added after the fact as well.
Don’t be bummed about your purchase. Embrace the frankenbus and enjoy the process of restoring it to whatever you want. Make it yours and have fun!

A picture of the right side showing the fuel filler area would be informative. |
