Any way to specify the model year?
-It's not a '51 due to lack of crotch cooler boxes.
-Has the mounting boss for the rear passenger grab strap, which per gallery photo was present at least for the '49 already. Probably already on earlier cars also.
-Shape of rear wheelwell shock tower upper bolt access area?
-Could it be a late '52 (Zwitter) already which has holes for the bolt-in vertical door support, that is blocked from view by the wood crate brace?

Would these be considered spare parts for a dealership or VW parts warehouse? I'm assuming these pieces wouldn't be shipped elsewhere to be assembled into a complete Beetle? _________________ My Beetles :

Much too big and complete for spare crash repair parts, I'm thinking knock down kits, or supplies for a factory elsewhere. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Why did the Swedes back then, feel that they needed such enormous country identity plate? That S plate could probably been seen from space! |

What's interesting is that the side panel is completely assembled. Front and rear quarter panels are welded to their heater channels. The doors are in place but just lashed to the assembly at the B pillar, and appears to have some sort of lashing in the center bottom of the door. It makes sense to have the heater channels already attached since that is a critical measurement and required the body jig to assemble in a quick manner.
There are four of everything including rear seat frames visible.
I would assume knock down kits, but were there any factories outside of Wolfsburg assembling Beetles during this time frame? That's clearly a split body.
VW do Brazil was formed in 1953, and they actually started building cars from knocked down parts, but that would be too late for this. I believe VW do Brazil was the first factory building Beetles outside of Wolfsburg so this would be the only possible factory they could have been meant for if a couple of years later. VW do Brazil didn't start building Beetles made from locally sourced parts until '59 so up until that point, everything was from knock down kits.
Perhaps these are '52 bodies that were being sent to Brazil for training and setup of the new factory which would start. _________________ Chris

Since that crate bottom isn't on any sort of wood blocks or pallet to allow you to lift it, it may just be an experiment for how to crate four knocked down bodies for the future CKD program. _________________ Chris

Forklifts weren't really a thing back then, stuff like that got pryed up with bars and put on rollers, or had straps slipped under for crane lifting. It was all manual labour with lots of strong goons and levers. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Ireland was one of the first CKD's? There is a pastelgreen one in the Autostadt, right hand drive and assembled in Ireland 1950.

^ ^ Very interesting history of the Uitenhage plant for VW in South Africa. No direct mention that the plant's first Beetles in 1951 were based on CKDs. http://thecasualobserver.co.za/port-elizabeth-of-yore-a-detailed-history-of-volkswagen/
Not for this thread, but note that it offered 2-toned Fastbacks, and look at that Plattenwagen utility truck in the 1966 section. |
