Is the Hella lens upgrade worth the $60 cost? Didn't notice if anyone bought them.thanks |
Honestly the generic lenses that come with our stock kits work pretty good vs. Hella (they look like direct copies.) We only offer Hella because some people prefer to have it say "Made in Germany" (mainly show-car people) _________________ www.vintagecarleds.com

I just installed the VC4000 kit I bought. It isn't dark yet so I haven't got to try them at night, but I'm already impressed. Ordered them on March 3rd and they got delivered on the 9th. Then it took until today (14th) to realize they've been in the office at my apartments for 5 days Here's a side by side with my old H4 setup. I'll update this once I can get some night pictures.
Night pics. I can't believe the amount of light these put out. Best $200 I've ever spent on any car.

So I just bought a set of the 7" 4000 lumen lights for my 69 bug and I have to say this has been well worth it. I normally didn't drive it much at night since the lighting with the sealed beams never cut it for me, but since we're moving to a new house in a few weeks that's further from work, it will require night driving daily much of the year.
With that being the case, I went on the hunt for the best set of lights I could find and I finally decided on these. I was torn between which set to get, so I went with the middle of the road 4000 ones, and after some discussion with the owner of the company, I went with the stock housings rather than the Hella ones offered.
Long story short, I can see...very well too after I got them aimed up good. Honestly, it's like driving a new production car now compared to the terrifying night driving I had done in the past. Well worth the money and I completely recommend this upgrade to anyone looking to enhance their lighting on their VW. |

Installed these Friday night after my wife indicated that she would not drive the bus at night without better headlights. Saturday we drove to an old fraternity brother's party, far out camp location in the Berkshires (MA). After arriving at the camp, at the bottom of a long, long path those who had arrived earlier said they thought it was a new SUV coming in, shocked to see those lights on a 72 VW Westy.
While installing the lights did some other must-dos; rust clean up, paint, sealing wire holes, rearrange chrome so that drain holes were actually on bottom, chrome polish inner and outer rings, etc.. Once those tasks were complete these LEDs were as easy to install as the manufacturer indicates.
Needless to say as compared to the old these are incredible, wife loves them. Now need to do the same for my Superbeetle and 66 bug, does the mfg. offer six volt versions? _________________ 1966 Beetle, Sunroof, Sea Sand

We do offer 6 volt kits, it comes with a small transformer to up the headlight voltage on the headlight circuit only to 12.5 + volts.
Give me an email for more information.

I purchased the VC4000 7 INCH LED HEADLIGHT KIT - German Hella H4 Lens Upgrade for $299 and am very satisfied with the kit. They perform brilliantly and just as advertised. I originally heard of them from Chris Vallone on YouTube and reading about them here on The Samba convinced me this is the way to go. It also revealed a number of wiring issues and brought me down the path of cleaning connections and finding bad grounds throughout the car.
I highly recommend this product if you want to see the road and avoid collisions.

6volt Guy here: They are nothing short of Amazing. I had upgraded to the halogen a few years ago and while they were light years better then the stock units, these LEDs are far more powerful. I always was hesitant to drive at night with the halogens, I did not feel safe driving to be honest. Now with how well these perform, I will now enjoy night driving.
Install was easy as I already had the modern housings for the halogens, literally a 5 minute install. |

From my experience, I can say some things have changed at Vintage LEDs since the last review five years ago…
Before ordering my model VCm3 headlights I called Vintage Car LED headlights to ask about the differences in their three levels of headlights they sell. I was told that the top two and most expensive tiers are if you have a show car and you care about how the style of the lens looks on the car in a car show environment. I explained that I have a driver level car and not a show car. They directed me to buy the “economy” headlights. I ordered a set of economy headlights from Matt McIntire at Vintage LED.
Both headlights arrived with chips in one of the three points that typically protrude out from a 7” sealed beam headlight. I have ordered 7” headlights for decades and never experienced this issue. When I called to inquire to ask if they had any quality control for a product shipped from India I was told over the phone that “a certain amount of product that they sell is going to be damaged and that they are regularly sold under their “economy” category.” This was the owner, Matt McEntire’s written response: “The lenses you ordered with your kit are our "economy" product. While they are imperfect visually, they have no performance flaws. We sell them knowing that they have some visual flaws in order to be able to offer LEDS at the lowest price possible”.
No where on their website did it state that the customer should expect “imperfect visual flaws”. When I again asked whether his company had any quality control over their product Mr McIntire responded “We do have quality control. In fact I personally inspected, tested and assembled the lights you received. If you would like a product that does not have any visual flaws, we have two other lens options that offer that, our classic and Hella lenses.” This tells me he knowingly sent me chipped headlight lenses while stating nowhere on his website that I should expect a damaged product, visually or otherwise.
I returned the headlights for a refund and asked if I would be refunded the $20 it cost me to return ship them since he knowingly sent me chipped headlights he stated “No sir, we did not refund your shipping cost. We also did not send you “damages” (sic) headlights. The lights you decided you did not want were as advertised and will be sold to another customer. This is a lie. They were not in fact advertised as “visually imperfect” as Mr McIntire suggests in his response to me. Instead of learning from this experience, Mr McIntire decided to perpetuate his misrepresentation of damaged products to another unknowing customer. I’ve also noted I wasn’t charged a restocking fee, because both headlights were defective.
In subsecuente emails from Mr McIntire he became immature and disrespectful by sending me links to places where I should write reviews and giant smiley face emoticons with two thumbs up after learning that I was a dissatisfied customer who is out $20 for shipping for a product he systematically misrepresents. Needless to say, I will never do business with his company again. There’s a good reason why they don’t post reviews on their web page. There’s also plenty of other good vendors out there honestly representing their product. |

Afternoon Mr. Cole,
This is Thomas Duncan, One of the owners here at Vintagecarleds.com
The product you ordered, and received (The Standard economy lenses) are exactly as advertised on our FAQs page.
I have that linked here: https://vintagecarleds.com/faqs/
Specifically, i'd like to point this this part out about the standard economy lenses we offer:
Our Economy lens is designed to give the lowest possible price while still delivering the best light output and beam pattern available. The glass lens may have some minor visual defects or imperfections that do not affect the performance of the lens.
Most VW owners (and myself) order/use the standard economy lenses. I have them in the following VW's I own and drive everyday:
1971 Super Beetle Blue (Sold)
1971 Super Beetle Blue (Sold)
1966 Beetle (Sold)
1971 Squareback (Currently still own)
I'm sorry the economy lenses didn't meet your standards. That's why we offer the two other options, the Classic and Hella lenses.
You returned your order, We refunded your full purchase price and waived the 10% restocking fee.
In my opinion, and based on the feedback from the 3,485 economy lens kits we have sold and shipped out, I do not believe we have " misrepresented" our product.
As far as Mr. McEntire behavior as "disrespectful" I've read all the email exchanges between you and him. Sometimes when working with upset customers, Matt may use humor or "memes" to defuse a stressful situation. I am sorry if that did not come across as intended.
Thanks- Thomas.
BTW, these are the Hella show quality lenses we offer (photo from a customer). I think they would be a better fit for your taste.

Just gotta jump in here. It's been a while since my last post. I have just purchased and installed the Hella lens LED headlights as well as the newly offered tail/brake light bulbs. Everything is perfect. Exceptional customer service with personal calls and involvement from the owners at Vintage. I could not be more impressed. And the light output is fabulous. The night roads are lit up like daytime! What an upgrade!! Thank you for the great support and service. I recommend these light to any and all who are currently less than pleased with their lighting situation. Bravo!! |

I was wary that my VC headlights would fade or degrade over time.
Not so.
Still bright and powerful years later.
Probably the best product I’ve ever gotten to improve these old cars.
Never realized how much i was leery of driving at night; had to be slow/careful and really strain to see.
The light upgrade makes a huge difference in how you feel about driving after dark.
It’s way more fun being out late in the car now.
You can literally drive like a modern car. _________________ Bus Motor Build
