Hi there, my 1303 next year will do 50 years so it's time for a lifting Smile
The car was really lucky, always keep in garage, two owners with me,almost all original and with not so much rust, only superficial.
So probably that will be the most boring restoration thread here Smile
Two years ago I made all the engine new, now is time for the body.
For some people the starting situation can be crazy to respray, because looks really nice, but here in Switzerland if I want to keep the status of oldtimer (Veteranenfahrzeuge) the car needs to be almost perfect, so no rust spot or old windows trim/seal or incorrect parts ( or no so obvious).
The car looks really nice but if you look close there are some rust spot and some peeling paint, on the bonnet mudguards and roof.
Mostly because the PO made a really bad paint job respraying only the bottom of the care, some asshole scratch all with a screwdriver just for fun.
I was very lucky because I found a bodyshop with space but not time to do it, so I dismantled sanded and they only made the paint, a lot of money saved expecially here in Switzerland and fun for me.

That was the starting situation:

So I started dismantling everything and some rust was found on the usual spot:

Under the car is perfect so we sprayed the epoxy primer over the rust part and then the ground:

Now is time to put all together and bring her back to finish the assemble, I go around without wipers, ext mirror, bumpers, trim and so on Smile

Looks like it is hovering! Cool photo! Makes me think of Star Wars and OB1 riding in the Hovercraft!

Loving the color!

Looks like it’s turning out beautifully. And idea how many hours you have invested in labor, or cost of supplies?

Did you redo any of the mechanical systems?

Beautiful car, beautiful city.

Went there once in the late 90's. Hired a car for business to visit a factory in Basel. Exited via the Swiss customs only to find Herz car place was in France!!! Was a real nuisance trying to explain to the French in my school boy French why I had to re-cross the border into France and then again back into Switzerland. Very Happy.

Im sure the French customs knew English, but they just wanted me to have a go so they could laugh at me.

"Où est la rue pour Basel....". Hahaha

Be a good time to pull out the "death foam" with the beetle apart.

You've got your '21 vignette, nothing can stop you now! Any mods to the mechanicals? How's the inspection up there?

For the spare parts around 800€, one running board, all the windows seal plus the trims, the door seal, plus a lot of small other seal, plugs, and so on.
For dismantle the car alone 4 hours, 3 afternoon to prepare the body and give the epoxy plus the ground and a full day to paint. 4kg of Biscay blu
4 hours for polish and for put it back I made very slow into the spare time. We have a two months newborn here Smile

In the last years I made

-engine full restore
- Nos steering box
- all urethane front bush
-urethane rear spring plate
- brakes and bearings
- interior with TMI cover
- new wiring for foglamp and rear windows defogging

a lot more that I have forgot Smile

I rent a garege box here so I can do mostly by myself, the mechanics here are crazy, mostly starts from 120 150€ pro hour

next step this summer will be the inside waxing and the bottom work.
There is not so much to do just a deep clean and some paint, no rust at all Smile

Hi, you are from Switzerland too so you probably know the whole story, here in Münchenstein they start to be crazy, last year a friends of mine with a oldtimer Capri lost the veteranenfahrzeug because the radiator have 4 bolts and one was different.

For the other fellows that's the routine:

First of all the car as to be really clean inside ( respect for the examinator), in the motor bonnet and under ( so they can clear see rust or leaking) if it's not clen they send you back.

Station one They start with the light, horn, wipers, water for the windshield, and the engine bay plus all the vin numbers.

Station 2 they check the brake and handbrake

station 3 they put the car in a special machine to check the shock absorbers

station 3 they check the wheel bearings and the connection rod with another machine, and go down in the pit to check all the underbody of the car.

Station 3 they bring the car to a small track outside to check the driving attitude and the emergency brake

Station 4 exhaust test ( not mine, too old)

After 40 45 minutes they bring you back the car and tell you the response, when something is wrong they give a list of the issues and next time (after a couple of months) they check only that ( you pay less)

Then is time for the oldtimer expert

You go to the Chef place with a lift and e look all the car very deeply inside and outside, looking for anything is not in order and for some big discrepancies ( a beetle with a subaru engine). Mostly he wants to be sure that the car is all original ( for what he knows) and most important that is really really in good order.
That's why I painted the car, with some rust spot I never pass this check.

EWhit the oldtimer check pased you pay less insurance, less taxes and more important you have the check every 6 years instead of 2

Holy crap! That wee bit of hidden surface rust would cause it to fail? Not many old cars on the roads I'm guessing.

Yes but only with the Oldtimer status, for normal car superficial rust is accepted...
