Looking good, Marc! I agree about silver being correct. Always good to have functional wipers - I have been caught in unexpected showers several times and you thank your lucky stars you have them when you need them!

One more item checked off the list. After a lot of trial and error, I finally have the Fresh Air Grills mounted with seals. When I bought the car, it came with the grills mounted but the new reproduction seals were in a box of parts. As many people have posted about, these seals are a pain to install. The main problem in my case was due to the seals being made from such a hard rubber that they are not able to compress and fit properly between the opening in the car and the grill. After some trimming of the seals, the job got done. Here's a link with the details.

Rome posted about using socks on the bumper blades to protect the paint. What a great idea. So simple but I would never have thought of it.
Oops!! I guess I got carried away!!

Bumper installation, like most everything, took longer than expected. First try looked great except for the right side bumper
bracket cover was touching the rear apron before the bumper was completely in place. Took it out 3 times before
I was satisfied with it.
Good thing I had the socks on it. Thank you Rome.

Thank you Rome. Your advice was very helpful and very appreciated. It's not perfect, but it's a whole lot better than it was.

Ha! That's the only part that beat me. If there's a trick to this I failed to figure it out. I was counting on the covers sliding separately from the brackets for this purpose but with the bumper brackets as far back as possible, the covers were still too close to the rear apron and they were slid back as far as they can go. When I tried to put them on, it seemed like I just didn't have enough fingers to keep them in place while moving the bumper around. One thing that complicated things for me was that the bracket cover seal rests against the rear apron on one side but the other side has to go up against the rubber grommet for the bumper bracket hole. I think I'm going to look for some rubber U channel.

The car was in pieces for over 10 years so I wonder if I have all the original parts. For 71, I think the covers should have had 1 bolt but these have 2. So maybe the brackets and covers are far a different year??

Am I missing something?

my car was a 'bitzer'. I ended up sanding the covers on the belt sander until they conformed with the body better, then gluing the little seal on with super glue to keep it in place.
I got the bumper fitted up nicely, then took it out again, added the covers with their seals and refitted it. Very time consuming Sad

That pretty much describes my day. I used my grinder to shorten one of the covers and then touched up the paint before final install. I'm quite certain these bracket covers are not for this specific model year.

When the car arrived from Richard Troy, the bumpers were installed but like most of the car, everything was loose. I had well documented removal of everything on the car and as it turns out, he had the painted bumper guard supports swapped. So the first try failed due to that.

Marc, FWIW the original bumper bracket covers on my '71 are held in place by a single bolt (if you squint you can just make it out in the photo below). IIRC the bumper bracket has two holes near one another, and my bracket cover has a detent that aids in alignment via the second hole. As you have a real knack for compiling illustrated how-to descriptions, I wonder if you've considered creating a sticky compendium of the Ghia-specific assembly hurdles that challenge many of us first-timers, you know, the seemingly small jobs that somehow require an inordinate amount of patience, e.g., in no particular order: front grill seals, headlight ring seals, bumper bracket cover seals, petrol filler cover release repair, door glass r&r... to name a few of my favorites Wink

Hi Charlie,
Your post and your picture really helped. It reminded me that I have an extra bracket cover that came off another 71 Ghia. It's really ratty and I don't have a pair, but I dug it out and it is exactly like yours. I compared it to what came with the car and they are very different. The 71 covers are wider and taller to allow the seal to go around the grommet. Other than having an extra screw, it didn't dawn on me at all that the actual cover would be totally different. For a car that is hailed as basically not changing much over a 20 year run, there certainly is a lot of changes!

I like the idea of test fitting just the bracket and cover, like in your photo. That seems like a good way to fit things one step at a time. For now the covers I have look ok, but I've already got a lead on a set of correct covers.

Creating one compendium sticky would be helpful for sure. Not sure how to go about that, but I still have a lot more "problems" to sort out! It seems like I took the car apart in a couple of days, but putting it back together "correctly" is much more time consuming, but also fun and rewarding!

As always, you are a wealth of helpful information.
Thank you.

Im not sure which brackets are correct, all are pretty close and i dont think anyone will know. 50-60 year old cars sometimes you have to "make adjustments" which you have been doing well since the start. For the body to bracket seal (dont tell anyone but...) I used small black tubing (for watering drip systems). I used a razor blade and cut a slit the entire length. Then slide the tubing on the bracket and fit to car. No one has ever noticed in 7 years. Smile Embarassed I also did not use the rubber hole cover. Embarassed

I like your black tubing idea. Simple. Some of the seals seem much more complicated than necessary.

I have a set of correct covers on the way. For now the existing covers will stay until the correct ones are stripped and painted. I think I will try your black tubing idea.

Need Assistance:
Since my Rear Bumper Bracket Covers were wrong for a 71, I am suspicious that the Bumper Guard Support tubes are also wrong. Does anyone know if they were made in different lengths for different years.

These appear to be too short. I have them as tight as I dare to go, They will not snug up to the apron. I suspect the previous owner bent them to make them work. They are curved at the bottom rather than bent at the correct angle. The top of the flat portion is not even close to reaching the apron.

I've looked at pictures of these and the bottom flat section is always flat not curved like mine, and the angle of the bend does not match up to the apron. I measured 120mm along the the side of the tube from where it's welded to the top tube, down to the highest point of the side of the flat section (see drawing below). Can someone verify this measurement? I think these look to be about 6 to 10 mm too short, or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

In the classifieds, there are plenty for sale but there's never a part number or measurement stated. If I'm going to order some replacements, I want to make sure I'm getting the right part.

And do you know what year car these came from?

So now I'm realizing my bumper is not pushed in far enough. Again, probably due to the wrong bracket covers. The slotted holes holes in the brackets have plenty of forward movement left but I think what the issue is that these incorrect bracket covers are preventing the bumper from going further in.

Thank you for posting the picture. Very helpful.

Here is another handful i had sitting around. They are all the same, just left and right. I have made left ones work on the right Embarassed , bent ends to fit the car i was working on too. Embarassed lengthened the slot to make them fit Embarassed ...
Looks like if you bend your end a tad more she may fit?

Looks like if you bend your end a tad more she may fit?

That's quite a collection. I remembered yesterday that I had at least one of these supports in a box of parts from another 71 convertible. I checked and I actually have the set. I was able to compare them to what is on the car and they are the same. The ones I have will work once I can install the correct bracket covers. The correct covers will allow the bumper to move a bit closer to the car.

Thank you for the information.
