I can’t say much about it since I signed a NDA, but I was in a studio where cars are designed for a major auto manufacturer, they all have poster boards up with old and newer cars from different manufacturers to get design elements for their own cars, I even saw a notchback on a board once in the early 2000’s, this has been going on for years and years and will still go on, nothing new here and then.

Just some others from my Gallery..

Mercedes Benz 150H sport coupe ca 1935. None survives, most chassis rebodied with the funny Roadster bodies.

1937 Mercedes 170H 2-door (look at those rear side windows vs. the Beetle)

Not surprising that Mercedes Benz built almost 40 prototypes for Porsche typ 60 project from V1 to W30 series.

Not at all, the 2CV is diametrically opposite of the beetle in my view. The only similar things are the sloping rear and the air cooling. I have noticed the huge gap that exist between Beetle and 2CV owners. Both are firmly assured they own the best car in the world, and that the others own the bigges piles of junk ever.

This one looks quite awkward with its long and bulging rear fenders, and the comparatively short wheelbase. It reminds me of the longer rear fenders that were available for Beetles in the late '60's/early '70's when installing the longer Corvair engine.

Another predecessor, conceptually if not quite from an engineering standpoint, is the Hanomag 2/10 "Kommisbrot" from 1925-1928, certainly one of the earliest examples of a German "volkswagen."

This more resembles the Ganz small cars than the later Beetle, in that it is really tiny!

look for the toyota publica. one fo toyotas first, possiably the first. as you can see from the name...kinda like the peoples car..and...toyota even givs credit to vw for it.as well as the car witch is kinda a squished bug...with...2 cylinder oposed air cooled engine...in the front...front wheel drive. oh well they almost got it right...we had one I think it was a 62,I dont remember for sure.I was my brothers.it sounded like a bug too.it was a slug but it was a car.and thats what they wanted to build trying to break into the nissan /mitcheybitchey dominated japan car market after the war. honda tried to make piston rings for toypta but the quality wasent consistant...and thus mr honda started out on his own putting surpluss engines on bikes.and black market gassoline. it evolved into the honda cub and then to the honda we all okow today. the cub was probably the highest selling motor cycle of all time.it was made to branch the bike,scooter/motor cycle gap.and it did that very well sold around the world as fast as they could manufacture them.
