I have a 1982 Air cooled Vanagon that I blew the trans out almost a month ago. We went to install the new one and wanted to replace the rear main seal. We come to find out I only have three shims behind the rear main seal and no thrust washer (the shim with the tabs on it). There doesn't appear to be any un usual wear or tear.
There is a possibility that its only been gone for two months (a very slim possibility) or its been gone for 60k miles when the engine was supposedly rebuilt.
Before I go investigating how long its been gone or how bad the end play is, I wanted to clarify that the Air cooled vans had this shim/ washer like the later models? I read in a forum that someone briefly said the air cooled didn't have em but haven't been able to get a solid answer.
And no, I don't have a manual... ones on it way now tho.

The thrust bearing is one piece on an air cooled. You'd see only shims. I recall the 1.9 WBX was the same. It was the 2.1 that saw the separate thrust washer. _________________ ☮️ |

Nope, air cooled doesn't have them. You've got what you should have in there. |
