That depends. Do you slay geese with your face?

itellya.... dragging a long-dead cedar log out of the woods, and cutting it up into boards is satisfying.

Here in the PNW, a 2X8 costs $11/linear foot at the lumber store, so every 10 foot board coming off that beam would cost $110.

That ONE beam has about 7 of them (--->$770)
How can that possibly be?
Half of a 11 foot log yields $770 in lumber?
It's true. (if I had a buyer)
Well it's pretty satisfying to slide each "$110 board" off.

Got a big pile of boards.
Something like $3000 ?? in "retail value", again, .....if I had a "retail buyer".
And I wouldn't have to store them.
But now I have quality material for my "projects".

Good times!!

The aroma alone must be rewarding.

Often moreso for the one who did it.
You know how that goes....Wink

I stopped on the highway to check all the straps and the Cedar smell was strong in the open air.

E1 this is for an front entry on our home deck. (and more).

Probably should make a new leveling blocks set stored in the Westy cargo area. Cedar is lightweight which is nice.
And I can arrange them for a “van porch” if the van’s already level.

Isn't that set in the 50s/60s? No Vanagon content...what's the relation? Just having to fix crap on your own?

I should've been clearer.

Fixing stuff yes but mainly the dedication, determination required to be Vanagon owner-operators. Like making custom stuff, "get me home" repairs. e.g. using a log as a wheel. Wink

While pulling parts from a dead Blue Star, actually it ran well but was so beat up it was worth more in parts.

I found 2 items that I’m surprised didn’t take this van down. The first was that it had original fuel lines, the second was that the coolant pipe insert was creeping out.

It’s really a shame that this van is being parted. It had all the goodies, leather steering wheel, full power, gray dash and striped seats and body cladding. The instrument cluster was actually in great shape as well. I got what I wanted off of it.

A while ago here on the Vanagon Forum, I read that many so-called air conditioned seats are actually just made to 'cool' by pulling vacuum from inside of them.

I've been mulling this over for a while, but hope to find out some things like "where do you get the vacuum (i.e. engine intake, or some extra pump of some sort)" and "what kind of tubing would be appropriate in the seat cushions?"

Anyone know of some examples?

A simple test to reduce the likelihood of a failure like this is possible at home...

Where the rabbit hole took me...

Here's a test to failure with an LPG tank. I never imagined that and LPG tank would balloon to nearly a sphere before failing (and the soundtrack is awesome).

Note the air tank failed at the bottom where undrained condensate rusted it. Very important to drain frequently.

I love to cruise the Classifieds and read the ads. There are a lot of people that are either dis honest or just don't know what they are talking about.

My latest exert is from a " 90 Weekender " van which is actually a Carat with a Pop Top added to it. I'm as guilty as the next guy of adding a Pop top to a Tin Top, except mine is done to a factory spec and I freely say it is a conversion.

I carefully read the ad and looked at the pictures and it is obvious that a top was added to this van, The seller states

" ,no body repair. The metall is 100% original and never repaired or welded. It has of course a few small scratches here and there, but nothing . . . "

Now technically the seller is not lying, I would not be happy if my neighbor bought this and that little ditty was not disclosed. If this van is sold as it is and the new buyer gets it and the realizes what has, I doubt they are going to be happy. I believe in Let the buyer Beware, but not mentioning this in an ad is just wrong.

I know that a lot of vans get a lot of miles put on them with happy owners knowing full well what was done and I'm fine with that. I believe in disclosure on things like this. This van has been for sale for a while probably because of this, I just hope some Newbie does not buy this and find out the hard way he is driving a Frankenstein.
