so i finally went into the unmarked box that said "new ghia carpet"

I assume it isnt an expensive one as i dont see cutouts for the shifter and ebrake handle. It is cloth trim around the edges. i do like the color because it is a lt tan/grey. Thoughts?

Also there is a TMI black vinyl boot that is brand new in a TMI box.. im thinking i should maybe sell that at a show and try to move up to a black canvas one?
Thought?

Nice bonus. Your deal keeps getting better. The carpet looks like loop pile. The carpets from Newton Commercial are loop also, but the loops all line up in perfect rows which looks more like the original carpets. If you decide to sell it, it will help fund the carpet of your choice.

As to the vinyl boot. I don't know but I wonder if the early Ghias had Canvas or Vinyl?

I removed mine and inspected it. It seems to have a ratcheting function using a grooved metal disc in the center of the hinge and a little sprung metal detent inside the base that has gotten gummed up. It seems that as you open and close the handle, the grooves in the metal disc should catch on the detent to hold it in a certain position, including closed. I need to get back to work on mine. I also took some pics. Maybe someday I'll post about it with pics if I get it operating properly again.

x2! The top is not up a lot but when it is I hate the look of the handle just hanging down...

I like the shift knob, the red line makes it look five miles an hour faster.

By 1963 boots were vinyl- not sure about 1960 but canvas always adds a classy touch. I think I remember Rome saying that your carpets should be charcoal but in any event they would have definitely been square weave. When I first was working on my car (which was also supposed to have charcoal square weave) a friend of mine gave me a set of carpets exactly like yours, except they were for a sedan. I was spending enough on the project at the time where I couldn't spring for a correct set so I used what I had (I dyed them charcoal) and then replaced them as funds became available. In my case I was looking for original pieces so I ended up doing it piecemeal. I still haven't ben able to find a nice piece for the driver's side rocker so it's still dyed loop! The correct carpet would really look nice in this car but there is no harm in installing what you have and focusing on more pressing things. I have a brand new canvas boot you can have but it's got mouse damage...rotten little buggers chewed some decent holes on both ends of it but I guess it could be patched....Got it from Chuck's and hadn't even gotten around to installing the snaps on it....

Thanks for the tips and ideas moogie32! I have charcoal mats ordered and i think i am going to go with charcoal squareweave carpet. Eventually i will go with the black roof that the mcode says it came with and most likely a black canvas boot because i do like the look of the canvas. I'm going to spring for them. Im going to keep the OG seats and door panels though and just clean them up. What has me in a huff right now is the musty smell coming from under the roof/that area behind the rear seat. I have tried it sealed up and left wide open inside and out. I have put drier sheets back there etc. Theres some kind of padding there and i think it may have to go if i want to ditch that smell. Its not that good old VW smell that we all know and love either! lol

And thanks for the boot offer. Mice suck!!

I was hoping you'd spring for the charcoal squareweave! Your Ghia really deserves it. GREAT you are keeping your original door cards and seats- That original vinyl can really clean up well and I have yet to see a modern interior look exactly the same as the heat pleated original did. Don't know what to tell you about getting rid of the smell - is it mold or mice? Do you think it's in that padding that buffers engine noise behind the back seat? I was able to get those pieces out intact on my car - I wonder if you were able to do the same could you use some sort of enzymatic cleaner on them such as what you would use to clean up pet accidents? Might be worth a try - Good luck!

my desktop went wacky with the latest Microsoft update so i am working off my phone and that's no fun. Good news is a friend who does welding and mechanics came by to look at the Ghia last Saturday and is going to tackle the mechanicals first and then the body. He is working on a 55 Chevy now but will grab it once that is moving along. He also has a friend that used to drag beetles at Englishtown who is going to help him work on the mechanicals as well.

Here are some quick enhancements to your driveway shot, to remove some "distractions" and even out some of the color on the panels. I don't have the Photoshop skills to repaint it remotely. Sad
