Alrighty ladies and gentlemen! Today was the day! After waiting a little over a week for my gaskets and my vacuum line to show, they did!
A bit of trial and error came with it today. First being I accidentally roasted a battery wire by putting on the wrong terminal. Then once that was rectified, I installed everything and my carburetor started leaking like a civ. After removing it (and in pictures) it was missing a casting plug on the back side. Good thing I had a sacrificial carb to pop the plug out of and then everything was right as rain! She runs like an absolute top! I couldn't be more pleased that all the work I've put into it turned out proper and she runs well! That and Everett will be pleased the vacuum line situation has been rectified
This bottom picture is a before with all the strangle lines it had going to it for a little comparison.

Took her for a quick cruise about 5 minutes down the road. Got the brakes working again too. Everything works as advertised. She still has a few small kinks to work out, hesitates a little on acceleration. But then again I've never driven a 36er for any distance before. A HUGE shout out to Morris Race Engines for helping me get all the parts I needed over the past week. Having the ultimate VW shop backing me up has been second to none and I couldn't be more lucky! Enjoy!

I love the sound of the engine when you first start it. What a time capsule! Lovely car. Looks like you had a perfect day for a nice drive. After almost 2 years of owning my car, I still have not had that experience. But I'm getting close.
I can feel your enthusiasm. _________________ Marc

Engine sounds great. You might want to relocate that ground cable to the case. I’m pretty sure that’s how it was done, I just don’t recall which case stud. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Thank you guys! I'm truly loving it!
Everett posted a picture from the 1959 manual and it shows it hooked up to the generator strap. I believe the picture is on page 2. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

I'd forgotten to mention that last week I did a quick oil change on her and put some seafoam in the tank since it had sat for awhile and the gas was noticeably skunky.
Today I filled the tank again after putting a little over 100 miles on it and it cruises like a charm. Also turns out I'd been mistaken and Carl''s aunt had gifted him the Ghia so I am technically the 3rd owner of it. But it's story I presented stands. That engine hasn't been on a cruise since the late 80's and it runs remarkably. Enjoy the pictures!

Ground strap: Not at the generator strap, but as explained, at the fastener beneath the engine oil filler. In the photo below (Loren's gallery) the large hole at the top of the engine and gen stand is for the oil filler pod. Directly below that is a boss with an open hole for the bolt/screw that holds the ground strap. I don't know the thread size, but likely M8 x 1.25 mm. If you try an engine tin screw (thread size M6 x 1.00 mm) and it's way too loose, then it's the M8. Place a lock washer under the fastener head so that it won't vibrate loose.

Thank you, everyone! I didn't locate the strap to the proper spot but will be sure to have my dad take care of it now that it's been clarified. The car now resides with my parents up in Washington while I'm down in Texas.
Exciting news, my final evening at home, I went to the brewery with some close friends who happen to also love VW's and after some discussion about what's left to make the Ghia truly correct, I was offered a September 1959 split case transmission, an original fuel cap and potentially a September 1959 radio in exchange for the current transmission installed in it! I also have an original nose badge that needs to be installed too.
Next venture home, I will be doing the swap and the transition will have been completed. There are small cosmetic things I'd like to do such as freshen up the engine bay but that will all come in due time. For now, for the first time in a very long time, its getting a lot of great love and attention. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

Great pictures. You have good skills with a camera as well. Excellent choices for settings. I especially like the shots with the Ghia's lights on. Not many pictures on this site like that. _________________ Marc

Beautiful Ghia and a great story. So glad you found the nose badge, it's begging for it. |

Thank you, everyone! I'm not much of a photographer but I'm glad the pictures turned out how they did. Believe it or not, they're all done off of my phone and are un-doctored.
It runs and drives incredibly well and my folks are now enjoying it. I plan to keep it forever and love it like how I love my beetle. The advice and help you guys have provided has been awesome and I truly do appreciate it. I'm a lucky guy to not only have this car but to also be part of the VW community. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

Hey guys, little update! Since leaving the Ghia up in WA, I worried it wouldn't be driven and I've been proven wrong! My parents daily it and this last weekend my mom took it to a family reunion where my uncle took his Thing. It gets driven often around my quiet home town and went on a Seattle adventure! I was also curious if there was a way to decipher my VIN beyond the table in the Archives? Enjoy!

Yep, have a stroll though the '59s on The KG Lowlight Register here: http://www.kglowlightregistry.com/index.php?Year=1...ass%5B%5D=
These are the '59s registered. Most have their vin numbers recorded and some their build dates. If you're lucky you'll be able to see where your Ghia fits in chronologically |
Thank you! It would appear that mine was built somewhere around March/April of 1959. The closest VIN I saw to mine that had a build date was 05 March 1959 and it was just a few hundred off. The closest VIN to mine currently resides unrestored in Australia.
I honestly didn't realize how rare of a car this was until I started reading more into it. I've always been a beetle guy, admiring Larmanm Ghia's but never thought to own one and my beetle is the same valueless 1973 that used to take me to preschool. It's only showing 107 registered '59's with only two that are near my VIN. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)
