I have a 90 GL with the center two person seat, often called the “3rd seat”.

I've searched for camper style rail covers but they seem to be rare.

I plan on NOT using my 3rd seal most of the time but would like the option of doing so.

Having the black tracks and the open spaces open to catch all manner of debris isn't desirable to me.

Has anyone come up with an alternate rail cover method?

If I had a sheet metal brake I could bend something up...... but alas.... I don't.

Ideas?

Dave

If it was me, I would hire a machine shop to fabricate a steel part, then paint or powder coat it. But not sure how much you want to invest in this.

You could try aluminum "U" channel.
2" x 1.25" x 0.17" x 0.26" Aluminum Channel 6061-T6-Extruded Aluminum.

They have many sizes.

Seems like you could make something that would work well and look good from some hardwood flooring. Trim and plane to fit flush and tight, kind of countersink some mounting bolts. I can't remember if those are weld nuts or not that the bolts attach too, but either way you could just run some slightly longer bolts.

Just spit balling, fun project!

They are indeed captured nuts welded on.
They look like typical seat belt threads. WRONG! Bolts are 8.8 10x1.5

I am toying with removing the rotted carpet and installing a laminate floor in this area.
Though some sort of non-sliding rubber based product would be good to have.

Good ideas! Thanks.

Contact vwcultmember. He seems to have the most bits and parts for the middle seats.

I took photos of my rail covers if they are of possible use to you.

I saw that thread this morning as I was seeking used Westy covers.
I was surprised by the number of individual pieces!

Slap some vinyl flooring on it and move on. $50 at Home Depot.

I have used 1/2" pressure treated plywood and then vinyl plank flooring on top of that. I like the vinyl versions since they tolerate water.

This attachment method has always bugged me. The gap in whatever the flooring is has to go all way to the door sill. If you keep the aluminum sill plate that has to come out, then the carpet or rubber, then the cork stuff before the seat can be slid out. Since there are blind nuts already there to hold the rails on, why not pull these and throw them overboard. Drill the matching rail part on the seat and bolt it down using the OG blind nuts. I don't see anything different in safety as the same number of bolts will get used in either case. This way you can fill the missing cork area and simply have a small hole in the carpet/mat/flooring for the bolts. I never plan to put mine back in in that location, so I cut some bolts and slotted them and used them with LocTite to fill the hole so water wouldn't come in. You could use socket allen bolts for the same purpose and have it easy to take them out when you want to put the seat back in.

Dave just an FYI, iirc the metal covers are only for the WESTY and not offered in the tintop 7 passenger configuration.
meaning that the metal covers won't cover the tracks the full width across the floor of the van.
the westy covers were also segmented in a fashion that allowed the track to be covered either with the seat installed or removed. ie. they're a bunch of short little buggers.
the tintops just covered the tracks with the carpet flaps.

I'd suggest a openbox of Pergo type flooring.. click it together but not installed permanently can usually do that for $10bux. so it's fairly sacrificial in nature.
