Some sort of helicoil or similar thread insert may let it work.
"Universal" aftermarket knobs had wide threads and then narrower threads further inside so they would work on either. |

So just what are the thread sizes for these? Possibly a solid threaded insert could be available. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. Second owner of each. 1988 Mazda B2200 truck, 1998 Frontier, 2014 Yukon, 2004 Frontier King Cab. Stick a piece of rubber hose in the new knob( vacuum, fuel hose, whatever) till you find one that slides into the new knob and screws onto the old one.... _________________ You live. You die. In between you build hot rods. I mean VW's |

Since most accessory knobs have both threads, maybe someone already stuck a thinner piece deep inside the knob, preventing you from engaging those finer threads? |

Fill the hole with some epoxy. After it cures, drill it tap to the correct size. |

How about cutting some kitchen aluminum foil into a long strip about 3/4" wide, then wrap it onto the shifter's threads clockwise until you reach a thickness of about 1/16"? Screw the shifter knob on firmly while pushing down on it. I think the '67's shifter has 7 mm diameter and the '68's knob is 10 mm. 3 mm difference is ~ 1/8"; half of that for the thickness of the foil. |

Or, drop a ‘68+ shifter in the hole & screw your new shift knob on top. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
