Did Mark L ever get enough participants to have the door rubber reproduced?
This bus deserves proper seals.
It's beautiful. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

This is by far the best Early Barndoor restoration that I have seen up close and in person. I got a chance to check this bus out last summer when I picked up some parts. Photos don't do justice. _________________ I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

Thanks Guys! I've started switching my attention to some other projects, but still making small progress on the '52 as parts come in or time allows. I'm mostly waiting on the seats and the engine, and not wanting to do the rest of the exterior assembly (headlights, taillights, etc.), until I do a final polish when the bus is done.
The pedal pan needed a few repairs and I dropped it off, along with the interior grab bars, for stripping and powder coat primer...
I pushed the bus out and washed it for the first time. I can't believe it's been painted a year already...
I installed the spare tire strap, tray and gas tank. And some other misc. assembly in the engine compartment...
I got the cab wall grab handle painted and the ends polished. Does anyone know for sure what ash trays this bus should take? February '52.
Thanks

Here's some progress to report on the '52. I got the seats back and the interior is about done. I made a front floor mat...
Gave it a good polish and wax before final assembly...
Finished up the electrical work. I was happy to get that horn working. It gave me some trouble, but figured it out. I've seen a few different early versions, but I believe this is original to the bus?
Hub caps are painted and trim rings and rocker trim installed...
Getting pretty close... I'm still waiting on the engine, though I've installed a running 36hp to start getting some test miles on it.

Amazing!
Congrats.
Curious why you painted the fuel tank grey and not black? _________________ 1951 Samba 20-017894

Pretty sure it was that color. Is that not right? Here's Hornbecker's '52. These buses are pretty close in VIN#s...

Neat horn, I can't remember seeing one like that before.
Is it open around the sides?
I can see why they would have to change that if Yes as water and dirt would get in there and break it?
The tire pattern is cool too.
For those wondering, I took a look back and the tires were mentioned here in the thread:

I thought they were a sort of dark grey color unless it changed over the years? I think I've seen a lighter one too
My '55 tank is dark grey
I don't know if that is the same but different lighting. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks Everett!
That horn is talked about on pages 2 and 3 of this thread...

The early horns are in a can or cover. Here's another pic of the Hornbecker '52...
As for gas tank colors, I'm not sure? They seem to be varying shades of grey/black over the years. Real early ones are body color. I know that subject has been extensively discussed in the split and/or oval forums. _________________ David S |

Top notch work as always. Interesting the horn mounts behind the dogleg. I wonder when that change happened. _________________ www.blastserv.com

The flat cut floor mat, is that what was used for this period of bus?
(I'm guessing it probably was, but it would be fun to see the reference mats) _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Words can't describe how nice this deluxe is in person. Thank you David for bringing it out to OCTO.
The level of detail is insane. The headliner came out perfectly. All I can say is I couldn't stop drooling over this bus.
Here it is next to the Radium Panel. Two very special buses that were meticulously brought back to when they were new.

Hey von h, Thanks so much for the pics and the nice comments. I think I finally figured out who you are and meant to say hi, but the day was a blur and went by so fast. Hope to catch up next time.
I've been meaning to update this thread since I got the engine in... It was a great trip out to OCTO, really nice to see old friends and thanks to Ed and Matt for dealing with me and the family and keeping the bus safe on the trip. Unfortunately, Dick couldn't make it out, but the bus will be heading up to Prescott, AZ shortly to take a break in some cooler weather. Here's a few pics from the weekend...
The engine is in and ready to go.
Stopping by friends on the way into town.
Cruising PCH and the 405 on the way to OCTO.
And a pic with Matt Howard from Deluxe Customs. Thanks again to all who have helped out!

The 52 DLX and Radium bus are the best restorations I have ever seen. Pretty crazy to see them the same weekend. Congrats on finishing these builds! _________________ I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
