I'm back! Been busy with many things regarding the VW Thing. Thought I would post my most resent work. After doing a few burn-outs and finding that the wheels would do some hopping, I thought maybe it was time for a Kafer bar. After some reading and searching through the internet I came up with this....

My self made Kafer bar set-up.

Started with cutting up some 1/4" steel to use as my tabs.

I also went out and bought some (3) left & (3) right 1/2" Heim joints, 6' of 1" .125 wall DOM bar and (3) left & (3) right threaded bungs, (2) 6-1/2" x 1/2" grade 8 bolts, (6) 2" x 1/2" grade 8 bolts and 8 1/2" nylock nuts. In total, I have $250.00 in supplies. Took me about 16 hours to design and build.

Here are the pictures of how it turned out...

As you can see I added a bar that attaches to the hole in the shock tower as extra support of the 6" bolt.

I will say without a doubt this is a great upgrade in that I have NO wheel hop and the handing is much better in the rear of the Thing.

As I was saying, I have been very busy with engineering stuff regarding the VW Thing. I really like my CB Performance valve covers, but I didn't like the fact that they use a O-ring as the sealing system. When you go to remove the valve covers the O-ring gets stuck inside the machined area making it Extremely hard to remove the valve cover. This is my take on a fix...

I tried this first; cut out some hose and used some washers to clamp down. The problem was the hose would push out on the edges not allowing you to get a very tight seal.

I did make some cutting tools to make the rubber rings that fit inside the machined washers. The tool that I came up with worked perfect. If anyone would like to see please let me know.

Here is how it turned out. No leaks and they come off perfect.

I hope that everyone is finding some inspiration to think outside the box and try something even if it doesn't work the first, second, third, etc. time. Very Happy

Hello, just an FYI that I will canceling my subscription to photobucket due to increased charges. If you have any interest in any of the photos it would be best to take a screenshot before they go away.

Kind regards, Michael

Still working on dialing in the fuel injection. It surely is not what I thought it was going to be when I bought it, but sometimes you have to dive in to find out the truth in what is manufactured out there. I will say for sure that it is much better off road due to no slashing of fuel in the carburetor’s when you’re hitting a lot of bumps.

Also have a strange noise coming from the transaxle that I can’t quite figure out and may have to talk to Dave. It sounds like a CV joint/axle noise but when you push in the clutch the sound goes away. The sound is not always present, it comes and goes.

How about you screen shot them yourself & upload them to The Samba images to preserve the integrity your thread, even just for your own use later?

I have all the pictures, they are not uploaded to thesamba and therefore will become a broken link. There is not way to edit old post and it would take a great deal of time of it was possible

I’m sure one of the mods or even Everett himself would allow you to edit your old posts if you had the desire to put forth the effort.

Bummer! I have really enjoyed this thread and build. Definitely understandable though.

Last week my wife & I had spent the week camping and driving the Thing about 400 miles in and around Big Bear Lake & Lake Arrow Head. 70% was off road and the Thing did a very nice job. I needed to remove 35% from my fuel injection fuel table to make it run correctly. Just love the fact that fuel injection is so smooth and runs without issue down as low as 600 RPM! I was able to idle up hills without touching the gas pedal and the engine just chugged along.

Here’s a little video of one of our runs...
