|
|
Hi All.
I've searched online & reached out to a dozen companies trying to find a roof rack to fit on the back of our 1973 Pop Top - yes, this would go over the built-in one for ascetics reasons.
I've seen a few pictures of people with some but I can't figure out where they purchased them. The main issue is the height, not the width.
Does anyone know where I can find one or get a custom made like the one in the image?

We heard you like roof racks so we put a rack on your rack...
I've never seen one advertised that is extra tall like that. You might have to just get one and modify it. _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

Wow. Tough crowd. I think it's a fair question since they specifically asked about a rack to fit over the Westy storage rack. The question was not about where to get a roof rack. Do the regular racks fit over the fiberglass? I don't know the answer to that. But if someone knows for sure it fits, that might be the helpful information the OP is looking for. I didn't see anything in those links that mentions / shows them fitting over top. |

Resurrecting the OP question about the ability to mount a Tin Top vintage style rack on a pop top. Specifically I have a late bay, though TTBOMK it can't be done without modifying the gutter mounts to mount directly to the fiberglass sides (for obvious reasons). Has anyone rested and/or performed a trial run of positioning these vintage racks on a poptop just to see what type of mods would be required? _________________ 1974 Westfalia

Wow! Incredible! All you smartasses with your link spamming and insults somehow missed the very obvious and quite reasonable question!
I haven't found one myself, but I wonder if you could do something similar to what people who attach Thule racks to their pop tops do? That is, bolt on a gutter attachment on the side and then fit a classic roof rack to that
Like these: https://www.amazon.ca/Thule-542-Artificial-Raingutters-Gutter/dp/B0002MBP82
Fixed to the sides of the luggage rack and then fix a normal classic roof rack to that possibly _________________ 1973 Westfalia named Angie

I do recall this version (modified and/or new rebuilt) luggage roof rack made specifically for the early pop top. Must of been over 8+ years ago. I then recall feedback saying why would you put a rack over a rack.. But again they look cool and they still serve as a functional rack so why not? I'm sure this company is gone or no longer making them as it was difficult to locate these images. Anyone recall the company or even better know what modifications are required?

I have trouble think of a reason to do that. Maybe his fiberglass rack is busted. |
Well, one does wonder how much weight a fiberglass roof rack can carry compared to a metal one. For sure, I'd think one is much stronger than the other _________________ 1973 Westfalia named Angie

I get it.. luggage rack over the fiberglass rack is a debate.. etc.
I have a latebay, not a early, and my intent is to mount a 3 bow vintage rack towards the rear of the fiberglass (generally situated in the same location as the above photos) using the yakima false gutters.
I thought about buying one and then laying it on top, but honestly it would be ideal if someone would of placed a vintage bow rack over the latebay fiberglass at one time or another. But really it may just look ridiculous and out of place.. hence why no one has done it. _________________ 1974 Westfalia
