Then I got this ‘70 for $200.00

After 25 years, I have close to $30,000 in it.

I’ve owned over 50 VWs since the late 1970s, some really nice ovals and type 2s which would be worth money today, but we live and learn right? My most recent example is the pinnacle of VW engineering a 74 deluxe type 1 Very Happy I found this car being sold as a roller parts car at VW show in Eureka Springs Arkansas about 6 years ago. Missing engine, missing most of the interior, generally sad shape soon to be too far gone. I gave them 500 bucks but what was left of it appeared original and no serious collision damage and Original paint and less than 100k on the clock. So I dragged it home and made a winter project out of it. I built it all back mostly stock except wheels and a quiet pack header. I don’t drive it every day but when I do it takes me back to high school days, you see I had a car like this when I was a senior. Back then it was a lot newer and it floated in the water. Good times. Very Happy
This is not my lift or shop

Free, one family since new. parked in a hangar since late 90's. They quit driving it because heads were loose. Grandson had it,who was a petroleum engineer and drove it out in the oil fields Shocked
Pulled the engine, tightened the heads all was good.
Had to put a battery in it, new tires and brakes.
Can't believe it has been seven years.

I'm embarrassed to say what I paid for this plus the seller ripped me off for $300(my mistake).
Was in a rush to by one but the color and chrome wheels got me.
One good thing is it is not a rust bucket.
On top of what I paid I put a new 1776 motor in it and a freeway flyer and some missing parts.

$500 for my 1970 Squareback in December 2019, original paint, interior, motor, had 36,000 miles and had sat in a barn that had been parked in March ‘76 and had a good amount of original paperwork. I’m still under what is cost new in 70 which was ~$2600. Sadly, the 6 years were on salty Michigan roads in the winter.

My first VW was a '68 Karmann Ghia convertible. I paid $1500 for it in '78/'79. Sold in 1985 for $2500.

'63 Karmann Ghia coupe from a junk yard $300, drove it home in 1980. Wrecked in 1981, parted out and scraped.

'70 something Karmann Ghia coupe wrecked left front end. It hit a telephone poll. Bought and sold for $500 in 1981.

'74 single seat rail, street legal. $1k. Sold 1982 for 1k. I kept Motor, wheel/tires and off road lights and got a motorless '63 Panel bus.

'63 Panel bus in a trade. 1982. Stolen in 1986, found stripped, then scraped.

'63 Panel camper in 1985, $500. Sold 1986 $600.

'63 double door panel, $300 running in 1986. Sold in 2012 $2800.

'69 Westy tin top, $9k in 2017. Sold in 2019, $12k.

$1600. Was told it was a 1973 but found out it was a 1973 with a 1971 body which was pretty disappointing. Smile

I had been buying and selling VW’s, parting out the unfortunate ones for several years when an acquaintance called me and said he knew I was into VW’s and wondered if I would have any interest in a Porsche ? I said well....it depends and he went on to tell me that a guy had called him knowing he bought junk cars and said he had a 1966 912 he wanted to sell. He said he had just wrecked the front, but it was still drivable. I said I might have some interest and asked him what the guy wanted.....he said $100.00 😳
Needless to say I headed out the door !!!
I met the owner at the tow yard paid him $100.00 and he had to go in and pay $65.00 towing & storage ! I drove the car home with a BIG smile!!!
The car had it’s issues but for the price I wasn’t complaining ! 😁

I paid 5K for this 67 it is in pretty good shape. Very little rust, runs great and looks good from 15 feet, needs new seat covers, carpet/rubber mats and i think I will just drive it that way, 5K really isnt a high price for VWs in Calif. Confused

1968 Sunroof Beetle (Auto Stick) - paid $100 in 1989. Not running, sitting in a guy's driveway for years. I was attracted to the sunroof. Laughing Ended up selling it to my brother.

1964 Baja Bug - paid $50 for it around 1990 (no motor...ended up trading it to a buddy for a 30/30 lever action rifle.

1963 Ragtop Beetle - paid $800 around 1992 off the Auto Trader in Los Angeles. Running, but had front end damage (needed a front clip). Again, a fascination with the sunroof. Sold it at the Pomona swap meet in SoCal for $3500.

1971 Squareback - paid $200 off eBay (no one else bid on it!), no motor. Ended up selling it for $500 as-is.

1966 Beetle - paid $400 in 2012 (my current project). Complete but not running, only bill of sale. The seller knew nothing about VW's. Listed it as a '63, which clearly it was not. Was asking $800 for it. Offered him $400, and he turned me down right away but gave him my phone # if he changed his mind. Yes, he changed his mind. Wink

Mine will start to add up eventually. For now i dont have much money in my cars. Both my vws are inherited projects.

My 52 bug cost me nothing. To date i have spent ~$25 on it. Bought a 52 license plate. I doubt this project will be too expensive. I have a lot of the parts.

My 54 pickup cost me nothing. To date ive spent ~$1200 on it. Bought a 53 dash pod and speedo. Also some patch metal off of a 54 kombi. Also bought a mint in sand paper, paper towels and rust dissolver goo. Parts for this thing are going to necessitate a looooooong time frame.
