Someone was telling me that the round VW emblem at the top of my 1967 front hood should have a thin black paint line in the outter rim. Someone else told me this is not a given. Should that emblem have the narrow groove in the outter ring painted black or not? The rest of the beetle is going back to factory stock.

The one on my father's stock 67 has the remains of the black paint in the outer edge groove. I repainted it and it looks pretty nice.

I have seen NOS ones with black in all recessed edges, and I have seen originals with the remnants of paint in those crevices. I assumed that mine had worn out over time, so I repainted it in that way.

My belief is that they were originally black.

Just painted mine too. My badge, though not original, had some imperfections in the surface. So, I took my time masking it to avoid getting paint in any crevice where I didn't want it to be. I gave it a quick shot of gloss black spray paint and once dry and unmasked, it looked great.

However, I realized that I didn't do the little recess beneath the "V", so I did a quick mask with 2 pieces of tape and dabbed it with the point of a sponge with some of the spray paint shot into the cap. Easy and quick, it looks very nice now. I've grown to enjoy some of the subtle little things about these cars.
