I would like to find and acquire one of these. Can someone tell me what years I'm looking for and how rare they are to find? I am a metal shaper and do sheet metal restoration work, so the condition does not need to be perfect. Thank you.

yes, there are 2 versions = 1949 to 9/1952, split with early nose...

And 2. 10/1952, (Split Zwitter made up to 3/1953) AND ovals through 8/57, with W deck lid and later nose - z

If it's for a project and not for an original split cabrio bug, why not buy a steel reproduction?

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1430022

Here is the same thing but slightly more expensive on eBay.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-Vintage-Parts-W-Deck-L...0zvpz00004

They are available cheaper in fiberglass, but it sounds like you'd prefer steel.

The KSR decklid may need to be reworked at the top curves if you go with the repro steel one.

back in the day, back in Germany, people chose another option. They spliced in the louvers from the Renault 4CV.

I like that 4cv louvre style - there was a nice grey 70s cabrio converted to an earlier sloping headlamp style with that treatment of the decklid.

Is the KSR decklid the only steel reproduction? Having to reshape the top edge is annoying. d'oh! Maybe welding in Sam Steel stamped vents to a non-vert decklid is a better option?

What about buying a normal non vert split deck lid and adding the louvers. Making the inner rain catch would take a little work but not impossible.
btw I do have a regular deck lid for sale Very Happy
