So I learned a few things.

An ant infestation can be for a few natural reasons.
They are seeking proteins, are thirsty, or seeking sweets.

Recently I had another kitchen counter top ant infestation and tried to figure out what the ants were seeking, it turns out the ants were seeking sweets.

I bated them with a drop of honey, and they came to the honey drop in droves.
At one point it looked like cows at a water trough.

So I mixed some Boric acid (read Borax laundry detergent) into the honey and let the ants eat for a few days on my kitchen counter top.
After three days the ant count was down to under twenty ants compared to the thousands that were showing before the treatment.

You have to deal with the creepy factor in this situation. Your counter top will be covered with ants for a few days.

1tsp of honey + 1/4tsp of boric acid = ant killer! Let um eat!

Try it, you might find that your ant infestations are reduced over time.

WAY back when my Mamaw had borax & flour in jar tops under the sofa to beds, & curios - never saw a roach nor ant anytime.

I lived in a small town of about 1000 for 11yrs. I'd call a coworker over to harvest wild spring onions before I cut the yard.
I also had a nasty bad ant problem.
I tried darn near every bag & bottle of poison available without good results - employee discount from lumberyard helped.

An old timer customer told me to try grits, good ole regular grits (NOT the instant type). I sprinkled some on a few mounds, around the foundation, & piled near the baseboards. PROBLEM SOLVED & cost $1.09 at the time.
Seems the poison wasn't being fed to the entire mound & queen so they would tunnel down & over then a new mound would spring up. Every ant gorged themselves on the abundant food source. They did not enjoy their next drink !

Doesn't work on sugar ants but is pet friendly.

Listen to this Use Karo corn syrup, warm it up a bit, add no more than 5 percent by weight regular boric acid. Be aware that u are now baiting for attraction, thus perhaps a million ants will come. Also note that some ants can survive beyond the rate of attrition and feeding them this poison bait won't work well (as in carpenter ants.) I had pest control operator licenses in several states so not BS'n.

OK busdaddy, you've got a fight. Carpenter ants are best dealt with by source elimination. Locate the nest, watch the ants as the trail back and forth. There are often satellite nests in varied locations but connected to the Borg mind. Baits are tough here because you may attract more activity but never reach a kill off ratio.Bayer makes a good one "maxforce" Look at night when they are active,in the dark Look around und everywhere you suspect trails or entry. Going in yard, checkbotoms of trees and crevices for ants. Carpenter ants often nest at roots. If thee is anywhere providing moisture, check it.Shoud you locate a nest blast it, but there maybe others. Usa liquid exterior spray at base of buildings as residual Good luck hunting

The company I worked for made Combat brand ant killer. You want a poison that doesn't kill the ants immediately so they will take it back and share it with all their little friends, and massacre them all. So look for a product containing the active fipronil or hydramethylnon.
