I think mine needs changing. Question is - where is it? Is it in the fuel tank? A difficult job to replace?

is it still CIS Bosch injection?
That filter is under the car, near the passenger side tire.
One 10mm bolt clamps it in place, and an open-end wrench is needed to hold the filter can in place as you undo two banjo bolts to free it.

I thought they were closer to the air filter. That may have only been with the Rabbits. Worth opening the hood to see if it's there.

It should be tucked between the fuel distributor/air box & the strut tower on the driver side.

Yep, put a towel on your fender so you don't bash the paint when the wrench finally breaks free.

Yes I think that's it! A big silver cylinder thing, with a hose coming out of either end.

Question is: will gas spurt all over when I turn that bolt? Or is it only pressurized when the engine is running or the key turned on??
