I’m not sure what else I can do. There’s only two known vanagon mechanics in Vegas and the last one I took it to didn’t put on one of the new heads on right and a corner of it popped out on the Highway. I dont know enough about engines and transmission to pin point the problem so Im pretty much at the mercy of asking them to diagnose the van for me.

That's the same honesty you've shown us from the first post. I think we all empathize with that. Everyone here has been there before--not knowing everything you should know to solve a particular problem. I take my Vanagon knowledge for granted sometimes.

I agree with Dan, though--you need more evidence. If you're comfortable bringing that evidence here and sharing that evidence with us, we might be able to guide you to a more informed decision.

The outcomes you've mentioned so far--new transaxle, and possibly more--are very open ended. Like $5,000+ open ended. Like mechanics taking advantage of your disposition. If these outcomes are legitimate, fine... but it does not seem legitimate so far, from what I've read.

We all want to help. Keep us posted.

If the mechanic he is taking it to is a Vanagon specialist, then is there reason to assume that the mechanic is wrong? Sounds like there are multiple issues, but given that the OP has limited knowledge and continued to drive the mechanic's word, unless there is reason to believe otherwise is more than likely correct.

Pulling the pan from underneath the differential takes all of five minutes plus a few minutes to let is drain, so it seems only reasonable to me that the diagnoser (the mechanic) would do that before he made any proclamation of what might be wrong with the box.

The mechanic is currently draining the transmission to get a proper diagnosis and pictures of the damage. I also asked him to investigate the low oil pressure problem for me but he says he can’t really tell what the problem is without driving it. He says if it’s the oil pump it’s going to require a rebuild. Is there any other way I can find out if the engine needs a rebuild first.
