Not too much happening here lately. The weather has been cold, I mean really cold for us -10°C and snow.

This is what I finished before it got too cold.

Today I had a day off and I decided I needed to be somewhat productive. Now the weather getting warmer and the snow is melting, still not really the kind of weather to be working on the car in a open carport.

I decided i could try copying the typ3 radio bracket someone had offered on eBay for €89. He luckily posted a ton of pictures of the bracket and I think I was able to come up with a decent copy of it.

I have a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio which I had bought for 30SEK ($4) on my last trip to Sweden and it does not have the bracket for the rectangular mounting hole which the original bracket had, therefore I made my own version.

I will still need to weld the corners and the trim the whole thing. Once the metal work is done I will paint it and probably wrap it with vinyl.

Today I bought a used manifold for the sidedraft carburetor. Turns out I got the wrong one. It is the very early on 311 129 701. What I need is the 311 129 701 A or at least a part of the pre-heater tube. I wonder if there is a market for the really early version. Or should I cut it up to fix the other one.

Any input would be appreciated.

It's much harder to find a decent earlier one, even though the market is probably much smaller.

I wouldn't hack it up to fix a later one.

Too bad you are not in the USA - It's easy to find an "A" one in the USA.
I have several but the pre-heat all need to be cleaned out - this is normal

Thank you Everett for your input. I guess I will clean it up, paint it and put it up for sale.

I can probably fix my original one, I just have to replace 6 inches of the pre-heater tube.

Too bad shipping has become so expensive. I used to ship stuff back and forth on slow boat for a reasonable price. And I used to take part on the plane with me when you were still allowed 2x 70lb. I even took two cargo doors for my splitty with me one year. The crate barely made it through the x-ray machine at SFO Pray

Do you know Mario Steinhauser? He is in Germany with you and the guy has a serious Type 3 parts business. See if he has your part?

The repairs look good. Are you going to fill in the small rust hole in the curved section?

Yes, I do. I have previously ordered parts from him. I am in no hurry at the moment. I still have a lot of work ahead. I am just collecting parts for the restoration and working on the body. I think, I will be on a good schedule if I finish the body repairs by fall.

That'll work. Looks real good. Just wanted to make sure you got it/them while you were in the area. Wink

Can anybody show me what the missing nob should look like?

More work on the notch.

Refurbished the window trim for the passenger door. Replaced the window scrapers with beetle parts. They just need a little trimming and new holes for the rivets. I used 3 x 4 pop rivets without the pin.

Fixed the passenger door, besides some rust there is also a lot of bondo on the door. Someone tried to repair some dents without removing the door cards. There was a deep scratch and some dents. I sanded about 1/4" of bondo off of some of the areas. I have been able to pound out most of the dents fairly easily.

Amazing fabrication work there, can I ask for some help I have a 1963 sunroof module notchback and could do with some pictures of your pedals especially the throttle pedal to see how cable goes in and it goes back together.
Thank you for your time

Looking good Cool those pics remind me of the same struggle i had Laughing

about the preheating tube, if it's such a short length you need, couldn't you fabricate it from scratch?

Thank you for your kind words. I guess the design of the car dictates the work which needs to be done when restoring it. Some cars are worse than others.

@jon5

Here are some first pic of the pedals. I hope they are of use to you. I can take more once I pull them out. Give me a few days.

@andybla

I actually have some steel tube here for that purpose, but my first try to bend it didn't work out. I will probably need to make a tool for bending the tube.

It was a pain to get the clutch pedal to come off. It had cracked and I had to weld it. Once every thing was apart I decided it was a good idea to replace all of the bushings. I'll have to order the parts. In the mean time I will sand blast and paint the clutch and brake pedal.

Yesterday I finally got around to finishing up the pedals.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And then a friend of mine called me to take a look at a barn with some VW parts. Most of the stuff was old bug parts, not all that interesting.But, I did score a NOS seal for the front hood and I found NOS sill trim for the Type 3 too. I have a deal with the guy, that I will pickup an engine and the trim for a decent price. He would really like someone who would take all of it. I don't have the space and I am not a bug person.

The seal has suffered some from lying around for decades but I think it is still usable and much better than what was on the car. And it was for free Very Happy

If you do need to fab the preheat pipe yourself try filling the new tubing with sand and capping the ends before bending it. I have not tried it myself but have been told it helps keep the tubing from kinking. Then just cut the caps off and weld in place.

As for what the rear trunk release knob looks like, it's exactly just like the rear trunk release knob of a Fastback (same part). That might help you locate one.
