|
|
I've got a noise that is driving me nuts!
90 tintop, WBX, Automatic
I cannot find it.
On today's five, six hour drive I made some observations.
The noise is a rubbing/odd rubbery squeak sound. Almost like a tire moving on the rim. I cannot 100% identify front or rear, but it is the drivers side.
It happens going forward.
It happens while coasting, if it starts to rub, I step on the gas and it is instantly gone.
If it is making the noise, if I turn ..... it often, but not always, goes away.
If I brake, that has zero effect on the noise.
If I kick the trans in neutral? No change.
The rubbing is in relation to tire rotation.
I've jacked it up but can't make the noise.
I plan to replace all of the wheel bearings, but alas...... life is busy.
Sometimes it is worse than at other times.

Do you still have the overhead A/C cabinet in there?
I had a persistent knocking and rubbing sound that drove me batty the entire time I owned my van, but the day I cut a hole in my roof was the day that noise went away. It only moved a little bit up there, but it was enough to make big noise _________________ 1986 Syncro westfauxlia EJ22

Soft tranny mount so a slight movement that allows something to rub? The next time you are going to cross a loose oak plank bridge, give me a call and I'll come with my stethoscope and find it. But not until I've angled all the great spots you have found. |

He's got 195's How could they rub? The fact that it stops when you step on the gas leads me to believe the soft mount situation. Grab the engine and see if there is any fore 'n aft movement. If it's soft enough to cause this problem, you ought to be able to move the entire drive train a skosh. But what does it sound like? Is it a belt type or tire rubbing or metal?. Rubber and soft or harsher? Backing plate? After you've driven whatever it is should get hot so go looking with your IR thermometer. |

It sounds like you can re create the sound fairly reliably.
Secure an old out of use cell phone to front then rear fender wheel, record video. (audio)? A Hero type camera would work well for this I think.
Recording audio while coasting in neutral with engine off, may help.

The more I drive the more I'm convinced it is the LF wheel.
It has been raining like crazy, windy, thunder and ground covering Hail so I've not looked at it.
I planned to pull a wheel yesterday but I was rained out.
It is odd how it comes and goes.
In my experience metal to metal brakes are continuously grinding.
Half my ride home yesterday was silent!
If I didn't know better I'd say it was a shot brake pad but it doesn't sound like that spine tingling grind brake pads produce.
Why do I know better?
Because I was stupid.
I do NOT trust mechanics, I preach that gospel continuously.
But when I had my tires put on I had them do a State Safety inspection.
Pennsylvania uses independent shops as their Safety Program.
It is a double edged sword because while it is convenient, it is also prime for fraud.
They are looking for work when they inspect.
My guy said it all looked good except for rusty front rotors which should be replaced.
No surprise for it had been sitting.
His face fell when I said Thanks, but I would do it myself, I purchased the rotors but haven't yet installed them.
I’ve never even pulled a wheel yet!
I'm now thinking the worst, I've a chewed up pad floating in there!
The mechanic probably looked at one side and called it good.
I will soon know for sure if the rains hold off. (Not a beautiful Mothers Day!)
I will hold off on cussing out the mechanic until I know for sure but I think that I will soon be doing so.
Just ordered pads, 2 sets, no one stocks them any longer! Keep a spare set on hand.
They will be here Tuesday.......
Updates will be forth coming.

Could it be upper control arm bushings? The fact that it went away in the rain for a while would have me looking there.

Is there any heat at that location following the noise? That would clinch your pad conjecture if so. |

Well, my mysterious intermittent rubbing noise is gone.
For the life of me I thought it was in the front but it turns out it was bad (really really bad) rear wheel bearings!
I could rock the rear wheels about 1/4” when grasping the tire at 6 & 12.
The outer roller bearings were both badly worn. The Right Rear had serious water infiltration and was actually rusty!
The rollers weren't too bad but rust had formed on the inner race and the outer race.
You could heat it while mounted to the Van and once removed you could feel it as you rotated the shaft in the housing but you could also hear it as you rotated it!
All new bearings, they all came in Timken boxes but there wasn't a Timken bearing in any of the boxes!
Welcome to the new World part supply system.
The odd noise is gone, being acceleration exacerbated was confusing me, but finding so much play in the bearings, they probably changed physical location when under the torque of acceleration?
Anyway, the rusty bearing (I removed the missing rollers)
