Package tray question

Hi I have a 70 slightly modified Ghia and am finishing the package tray. I have plastic cardboard for the base and black vinyl to cover it. Should I put 1/8 inch foam under, or glue the vinyl straight to the backing? Like an idiot, I pitched the original 5 or so years ago. Here is a pic of my backing.

I did with the 1/8" foam, to me it made it look better, and a bit 'plush'.
Sometimes when you glue the vinyl straight to the backing you can see every little crease and imperfection.
