All-
I snapped in place the license plate light holder.
The black boot covers it, but how does it stay on?
Looks like the wire feeds thru the small opening to plug on but boot just dangles.
Thank you

The little ridge on the inside of the boot hooks around the base of the bulb holder. Note the relief around the edge of the bulb holder when you look at it again. It takes a little finessing, but that is how it fits. |

I kinda predict you it will not fit.
The rubber boot I bought recently was just a tad too small to go around the bulb holder entirely. Really annoying, because I tried to stretch the rubber, but it would not fit, no way. I even tried to bend the bulb holder edge inwards... not a great thing to do either.
So I ended up cutting a relief cut into the boot to make it go around the bulb holder, and then I taped the boot to the bulb holder.
Please do let us know your experience fitting the rubber boot. _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

Did you try boiling or heating it up? That doesn't sound right. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle - running maintenance thread - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=675712&highlight=

Mine from WW fit perfectly, the lip sorta flares out on the metal when you have it seated correctly. |

Just could not get it to fit.... Granted I only tried for 22 minutes I'll jump back it tomorrow.
I think there could have been better ways to have come up with a different application/creation, but it's what we have. |

I have had similar experiences with the last two of these that I installed. The boot and the bulb holder are not made to fit each other. The rubber boot fits over the metal bulb holder part fine only before attempting to install the bulb holder into the lid.
The rubber that extends beyond the groove and should seal against the engine lid is too thick; either that or the two prongs that clip into the engine lid do not extend out far enough. The bulb holder will not go into place with the seal installed. And if one tries to install the seal after fitting the bulb holder into place, the bulb holder pops back off. Although I hate to do so, I might try carefully trimming the rubber seal with a sharp knife. |

Odd, the last one I installed from WW fit fine on an original bulb holder.
My complaint is it dried and completely cracked all over in a couple years
time in an enclosed engine compartment on a bus stored inside... WTF?! |

Here is a little motivation.
I remember starting at the wire side and pulling it into place lengthwise. |
