A fellow VW owner who is restoring a 60s VW discovered that his transmission only shifts into 2nd and reverse. All other forward gears don't work (remains in reverse).

I checked via pics that the lockoutplate is installed correctly and that the coupler is correctly connected to the hockey stick. New bushings and coupler installed.

Am stumped by this. What could cause only 2nd and reverse to work?

The stick is not rotating far enough over to the 3/4 side. Check the coupler. If that ain’t it, and no one has played with the transmission, it has to be the stop plate.

Those were my first thought as well. The owner says (sent pics) of coupler and lockout plate which seemed ok. I did ask if the lock screw had engaged the conical hole.

That it! It is a super simple system. Maybe it was in a bad accident and the hockey stick is bent strangely enough to not swing enough. BUT through my years, I have never seen that one. There was a bent hockey stick once, but the car did not shift at all.

Maybe go back to the inspection cover with a wrench. Disconnect the coupler from the shifter rod. Then utilizing the cage of the shift coupler, twist and see if all gears can be engaged and disengaged. Make sense? Then work forward from there! Well, if it not the transmission!

Try adjusting the shifter. Loosen the two screws just e`nuff to move it and push the base forward until it stops, make a mark and pull it all the way back, now go 1/2 the way forward, hold the base with both hands and pull toward the drivers side door (keeping it straight) make a mark, now push it towards the passenger side door, then pull it back 1/2 way and tighten the screws down and test drive.

The owner tried just from the coupler on and could not find all gears. I think he'll have to pull the trans and have a look inside nosecone first.
