Hi,

Ripped out the old cargo floors in my 1970 Transporter. Found this ripped boot. Can someone tell me what it's called and how difficult it is to replace? Is there any way to repair it? Do they make one that's split? Please see pictures.

Thanks!
Larry

I assume since you are deep into metal repair then your engine and transmission is out. Thats the time to order the shifter rod rebuild kit and replace all the parts

That would be the dust cover/boot on the nose cone of your transaxle. You would be advised to replace your shift coupler while you have access, it's the squared piece in front of the ripped boot. And while it's off you can replace the boot.

Uh, hold up on that thought for a moment!

The quality of aftermarket shift couplers has gotten so bad that I only use the end blocks out of a new coupler (which you used to be able to buy as a separate part) to rebuild an old coupler, and throw the rest away. On most new couplers the sleeve that slides over the trans shift rod is so oversized that it rattles, the grub screw hole is drilled badly off-center, and the sleeve is so badly fastened to the cage that it rotates. In short, complete crap.

If you buy a new shift coupler, do carefully inspect it for proper fit...

Good point, the rubber is generally the only thing to go out unless there is prior damage, generally by heavy handed PO's or rust issues. So Im with ya on only replacing the blocks. Last one I did the supplied screw was fragile and the finish on the threads was poor. So I went with original cage and new rubber blocks.

Looking back at your photos, it appears the blocks are red so likely its already been replaced at some point? Either way you need to remove the coupler to be able to replace the boot.

Clean it up with 99% Isopropyl alcohol then coat both sides of the rip with Liquid electrical tape, once dried give it a top coat.

Guys, the boot is $12. RTV is $9, if the boot is cracking now. Likely it is beginning to break down and will rip again? $3 to do it with a new boot, the right way.
