I'm sure others will chime in with their own experience with those carbs, but since you want to get your engine sorted I'd go with the right unit (which I think it is).
This and a good cleaning of said carbs, and you know you're starting with a good basis.

That said, nothing wrong with trying to improve timing settings with your current mech-advance distributor, and find it to work to your likings!
