Still back filling and tending to mess cleanup, but THAT was fun!
My Septic tank was actually working well, yes it was clearly overdue for pumping, but I've seen far far worse!
My problem?
Someone put a running trap just before the entrance to the tank!
There was No access to clean it and over the years the bottom of it rusted out.
Running tees are for gas control and are usually in the basement where the clean outs can be accessed, they tend to gather grease.
PLUS
Whoever installed the feed pipe into the tank did indeed concrete around the pipe in the opening...... PLUS they got a fair quantity IN THE PIPE!
My 4” pipe had but maybe 2” to pass waste! It is a wonder it ever worked at all!
Honestly? I need a new tank. There is concrete decay and repairs have been made.
Half the lid was cracked so I made a new one out of concrete. The tank top is nearly 3’ deep so I added a riser for easy access for future and hopefully more frequent pumping!
If I get another 15 years from it? I'll be smiling!

Yuk!! Lots of fun smelly work. My father was obsessed with grease getting into the tile field and sealing it. We had a cast iron grease trap with a removable lid which had a single baffle. Once a year he would go into the basement and clean out the grease. About 24 x 12 x 12. That makes so much sense. Why don't similar things exist today? Would have save you a bunch of trouble--well except for the poorly installed pipe to the septic tank. Good work and good thing you have the tin top to bring parts to the site. |

Your father was a smart man!
Today the array of chemicals we introduce into a system is staggering!
Not to mention anti-bacterial soaps! The entire system runs on bacteria!
Most people today don't understand septics and even if they have one they often assume that you can simply flush away anything!
I mean ..... it magically disappears right?

If I can avoid the "Freeways" "Interstates" "limited access" highways...... I will and do.
I was in Bloomsburg Pa today. My appointment didn't show so I called Pat (Vanabon ) to see if I could stop by.
He has asked me to come and take a look at his rig and answer some questions. Turns out he has a very well sorted 87 Syncro.
Pat is in Blakeslee Pa, due East of Bloomsburg.
I could take I-80 but OMG! I HATE THAT ROAD.
Instead I simply headed East. I zigged and I zagged, I'll be honest... I did indeed use my GPS at times!
At one point I was on a narrow farm road and encountered this old steel bridge over a beautiful creek with a loosely laid Oak Plank deck. It banged and clanged as any good vintage bridge should. Between the planks you could watch the Creek rush by.
These are the kind of treats you miss when you do your traveling on America's sterile Interstate system!
Did I save time? Oh heck NO!
But life is short, it is far better to enjoy the journey rather than rush as fast as you can to the destination.
I also stopped in Centralia Pa, famous for being on fire underground for decades.
Eerie place. Paved streets but no houses. Fences, stone walls, it is obviously a bustling place at one time, but no more.
There is still a house here and there, but the vast majority are gone.
I took some photos but they weren't very good.
This all used to be a subdivision, multiple streets all
Laid out and paved. now almost all Of the houses are gone.

^^^ I'm with you, Dave...leave the interstate to the truckers & corporate commuters...
Gotta say though, I'm loving this new build thread...the drama! ...joy! ...frustration! ...road trips!
Anyway, thanks for a fun thread!

Dave, you need to get the proper Mexican blanket to cover that rear seat bench.
you can get them at most interstate truck stops. or Amazon of course.
they have a nice burgundy themed one

I can bring it along once we get together for the AT shifter sometime..
PM me..

I admit it!
I bailed, I'm soft.........
I got my Stow and Go seats onto the VW tracks. I had to use a thin pry bar and open up the VW tracks hair.
They slide ........ stiffly slide ....... I can make them better but really? In daily use we only use the Chrysler tracks.
I noticed in last nights photo of the heater valve that the 5/8” hose I used didn't make the bend into the passenger area well, it had pinched.
I took it apart and put a long 5/8” coil spring inside the hose. I had purchased these anticipating just such a problem.
Reassembled and all is good!
