i take the pulley off, is IF you have the right tool, very difficult if not.
on the road traveling, i had a cut down allen key, but my preferred option, is to take the pulley off.
if you have to room, and still can't get the bolts undone, these are the tits, the important one in this set, is the 13mm, for those bolts, and CV joint bolts.

I have a set of the Irwin Bolt-Grips and I agree, they are the tits.

it's annoying that the set is half metric, and half inches, so you have to buy both sets i suppose, i have both, they'd not been beaten, yet.

I have the 19mm-25mm set and they are also unbeaten.

I have a similarly designed Harbor Freight 8mm, 10mm, 11mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 16mm, 17mm and 19mm set. It also works very well but I really need to make sure the socket is properly smashed onto the bolt. The only times I have not been successful is when there hasn't been space to really hammer on it. The edges are not as sharp as the Irwin kit.

x3...

My first attempt here was replacing the 4 short hoses to the oil cooler, involving one of the small pipes braced to the upper water pipe bolt...

Long story short, I tried everything including drilling across the width of the bolt head hoping to just destroy that sucker, but no joy...

Ultimately I just sawed through the brace, then wired the pipe back in place once the new hoses were installed... Evil or Very Mad

Drove it like that for 7 years before I finally got my revenge during a WP replacement last summer & it was the Irwin rigs that saved the day.

I now own the "full" set of ten... Cool Twisted Evil

Important that people realize the 12 points are XZN and are NOT Torx.
Often one can get out rounded out 6mm socket head bolts (8mm) by driving in the 12 point with a hammer. Then just replace with the far superior XZN bolt.

Finally finished it all.

Installed a new pump.
Installed a new bypass hose after I had to cut the old one.
Some new coolant hoses.
Installed GoWesty coolant pipe repair kit.
Installed new engine mounts. Now it’s not shaking anymore.
Flushed and filled with correct fluid and Subaru coolant system conditioner.
Replaced a lot of rusty bolts on the engine mounts and mustache bar.

I even sat and scraped all the chrome off the front grill. The previous owner painter it black but it was all scraping.

just for the record, when i did my rebuild i replaced the Allens with hex head bolts. seemed like there were more options for wrenches to reach them.

Thank you for posting a good high quality video of it running. I saved it so I can use it as a baseline of what a sorted wbx should sound like. Laughing

Idea a soft SS M6/8 from a hardware store would let you Drenel off the head in 28 seconds if it got stuck, too.

Good point. Vanagons may be too old to use Torx much.
