I'm currently installing an AHU in a Syncro with the factory diesel bits, and I have to say the 15 degree install is a much easier to service approach. Looking forward to your build updates. _________________ Casey--

Another mess...
As I was digging in and evaluating the MS install, I thought I'd look into the engine a bit for a welfare check. This was a bummer deal but better now than later!
Problems-
Cracks, "many" on a proprietary design "NLA" turbo manifold, one crack so complex that it have to be milled after welding up. I could throw in the towel and get the dime a dozen t3 garrett flanged turbo but I'm over it, my toy engine and my toy van can't share the same place! My cylinder walls had some shallow scoring and signs of heat. I'll tear into it deeper later but as a door closes another opens.
I spent the last two weeks mulling over my choices. I thought long and hard about a VR. My engine porn imagination got carried away about just how I could make it fit. The power numbers were just so if I used the AES cams and squared runners on a low pro rams horn style intake....(record screeched) I realized I'm doing it again...a repeat of the last build but N/A and two more cylinders and that wonderful low growl of the VR. Just had to die, now!
Based off of a fiscal decision and a practacle decision. I'm installing VW/Audi version of Top Ramen, it comes in many flavors to not disappoint, fills the void, and is plentiful just about anywhere!
Welcome the 1.8T!

Great to hear that youre going for the 1.8T I had it but not had the bases to follow the build it seems that you have to search for this conversion on other forums not much information here or I have not looked deeper.
Good luck on your new engine and looking forward in your progress! Writte something like the Vanagon Nut manual on the internet lol!!!!!!
Thanks again for your help in my build you have been a great help. That book has helped me a lot! _________________ Roger

A solid choice. I can verify that the VR6 is a very tough engine, but the 1.8t has much better torque characteristics for these vans. _________________ Casey--

Sorry about the last motor.
My last build was an amu motor, big turbo and aeb head. Still got a pile of amu parts if want.
Good luck. _________________ VW LT40 build. Like a Vanagon but 30% larger in every direction and 40% slower even in metric.

A bit more progress has been done. It certainly doesn't seem like a lot by the pictures. Since the last post, I've torn the engine down for a welfare check. Had the head pressure tested and resurfaced. Plastigauged the rods/mains
and reasembled the thing. Recent timing belt and water pump chain tensioner and chain as far as I could tell! It was maintained well.
I had the ecu out with a local tuner for a remap and mobilizer delete. While he's at it, he's removing all the emissions crap. No more SAI, secondary o2 sensor and all those damn hoses and check valves....gone! I am keeping the evap purge valve, my own pieve I suppose, I like having a gasoline vapor free van.
Between things, I've managed to get the wiring somewhat sorted out. It's time consuming but I enjoy it. It afforded itself some bonding time. My son can now read and understand Bentley schematic diagrams and how relays work, he really enjoyed it.
I think I may have finally solved my drive line vibes....time consuming venture. But once I was sure of what I was doing, I nailed them down on the 4th reading. It took all that equipment to get it done. A strap, hydraulic table, engine support bar (rotational angle) and the chain hoist.

Nice progress Dillan! Hope to have more pics and details of the build I would love a 1.8T in mine in the future! _________________ Roger

Reviving this thread as I'm about to embark into another phase of this machine. It's been a while but I'm happy to say that this engine conversion has been running strong for a couple of weeks now. This engine really transforms the vanagon experience!
