Nothing.

The case was used for a rebuild and the original stamping was ground off.

But by the ribs on the side of the case, I'd bet its a later case, dual relief.

I’m a rookie at this, why would they shave the number just because of a rebuild? Also, what is a later case and dual relief?

your 1964 would of come with a 40hp.1200cc. like stated your motor looks to be 1970-later. by the ribs. a pic of the whole motor will help. the lone A is not telling anything. AH/ AE are later 1600's some re-builders grind the #'s off . why? not sure.

The serial doesn't look to have been ground off to me. I'd say it's likely an original exchange replacement short block that the builder didn't stamp the serial number on -- at least not in the normal spot for a type 1. The symbol stamped to the left of the A isn't perchance a VW inside of two circling arrows is it?

Thanks for the info. It sounds like it’s not period correct for a 1964?

If you're looking for an "original" restoration, no. If you're OK with representing a car that got some honest use and subsequently ended up with an exchange engine during the late 60s or 70s, it'll do just fine. You might want to look it over to see if the serial got stamped somewhere else and maybe transfer that over to the correct location if it bothers you as is.

As it sits the engine currently has several details that blatantly flag it as being not correct for a 1964 such as the alternator, 1300 style oil bath, 009 distributor, square top fuel pump, carburetor, etc.

You can look underneath to see if the case is a single or dual relief to help further narrow down when it was made.

now that you added pics of the motor . looks like a 1600 single port . not 100% as you can't see the ends of the intake manifold where they meet the head.
looked at the sf Craigslist ad . looks like a nice car. guessing your looking
to purchase? I would leave it alone . more practical with 12 volts and larger motor. it does not hurt value if that's the issue . helps if anything. it will
be a bunch of money and hassle to go backwards. imo. much more enjoyable
to drive as is.

Thanks for the help. I was looking at purchasing the car, but I’m an original/stock guy. 12v and not period correct engine are big, big minuses for me..
