I thought this was used at the dealership to indicate the model year of the car. Is this not correct? I may have read this in an ad, so I can understand how it would be false information.

That would be the job of the fake license plate used in the show room, the stickers were sold by WCM or WW a long time ago, likely to help owners fend off the usual question from passers by "what year is it?".
