After a few thousand miles of 3rd to 2nd crunching (unless I double clutch), I’m planning to drop the engine/transaxle out of my ‘67 Beetle and ship the transmission (axles removed) out of state for a rebuild.
My shipping plan is to pad and pack the transmission in one of those large plastic totes, securing the lid with several lengths of duct tape wrapped around the tote. I believe the transmission’s weight is approximately 75 lbs with axles removed. According to the FedEx Ground website, they can pick up the shipment at my location and deliver it to the rebuilder’s facility, signature required within 5 business days for $145.00.
Can someone here please provide the dimensions of these transmissions (overall length, width, and height with axles removed) so I can get an idea of what size tote I’ll need to source? _________________ “Tinker Toy” 1967 Savannah Beige Beetle Sedan...........Mostly Original Survivor

As long as you're sending yours out anyway, and if you're not concerned about matching #s, you might consider first buying a rebuilt transmission outright, then just use the box it comes in to send yours back for the core charge. These shipping boxes are purpose-built for VW transmissions and are sturdy enough to be reused.
I exchanged my trans for a rebuilt from Benco Transaxles in Riverside, CA and had no issues. Trans is quiet and shifts smoothly. http://bencotransaxles.com/
Several other shops to choose from...maybe some a bit closer to you as well. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)
