Cool car for sure. This will bring some serious money. But it's not for everyone. I would certainly spend some time admiring it if I had the chance to see it in person, but I would never want to own it. There really isn't very much Karmann Ghia left in this one.

^ ^ king, this one's truly incredible. Top notch parts and assembly quality details. This one and TheGhiaGirl's anthracite grey stock/restored '64 Coupe from a few months ago would be my top favorites, though completely different "personalities".

Odd that he went with a magnesium case vs aluminum on such a big engine. Lot of issues that might deter really big money, that and the custom color and interior. But all it takes is too guys really wanting it. I think to date the most expensive ghia that has sold on BAT was a custom big engine car...

The green 74 on BAT sold for $25k. Very fair price for that car.

A classmate and I back in the mid 70's were the only two Ghia's in the lot. I had the toasty 67 and he had the immaculate 74 Zambezi Green. Identical to the BAT offering. Sure brought back great memories Cool
I'm suspecting that $25k might have been his reserve. Seller should be happy!

Hey Gentlemen,
Thanks for all of the candid comments here and on BaT regarding my ‘69. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the overall positive response it has received. I was actually expecting more haters for molesting such a clean slate, but when you build a car to this level, you don’t want to start with a turd, right?! I Haven’t been on Samba much since I was chasing parts back in 2013-14 and not much of a Social Media/Forums guy these days (used to hang at the cal-look lounge). I was raised in the back seat of a ‘69 pampas yellow Ghia as a pre-teen and never got VWs out of my system! Ironically, this car was also Pampas yellow originally! Just wanted to check in and say hi and thank you! Hoping for a few strong bidders at the finish! Very Happy

When my wife travels to meets in the Ghia with me she comments on what she calls “Gushers” fawning and tripping over themselves to check out our Ghia. I’m always very flattered and appreciative when they do.
I’m am thoroughly struck by the level of craftsmanship and thoughtfulness you put into your build. It truly is wonderful!
I am curious as to why you are letting it go.
I strongly suspect you are going to be pleasantly surprised by the final price. It deserves top dollar.
Consider me a gusher!

A loaded question, refill your drink of choice!

We are approaching our retirement dates and plan to join the mass exodus leaving Cali. The next step is to downsize our belongings and begin building out a bare Sprinter Van. Selling the Ghia provides funding towards the buildout while reducing the footprint of my garage. Once settled into our “forever” home, My plan is to build a clean, light, entry level Baja bug to tow behind the Sprinter for trails, fire roads or trips to Walmart for Depends!
I also need to finish my “forever” car, the ‘66 Nova that I bought in ‘97, stripped down in 2008 and sent to paint. That’s when I helped a friend restore ‘69 Savanna beige Beetle that I ended up buying from him and became my first DKP club car. The Nova sat untouched till 2018 (the Ghia was completed in 2015) and is down to brake and fuel plumbing, wiring, sparse interior and final assembly. Now you know more than you wanted! Shocked

Congrats on your upcoming retirement. I made the leap a year ago and have no regrets and have gone car crazier since.
Best of luck on the auction, it’s very well done.

There's about 7 hours left with almost 12,000 views and just over 800 watchers. I predict this one is going to get slammed out of the park!

The record on BAT is around $60k for a Ghia I think.

Crazy bidding for an Hazet toolkit too.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1957-1962-hazet-tool-kit/

2800 dollars. That would buy a brand new Ghia back in the day.

I have my popcorn ready! Cool

$47,100 bought it
I would have guessed the reserve was $50k
I really thought it would bring much more.
Still a very nice result😎

I have no experience with modified cars like this but judging from the flurry of comments, I was guessing somewhere around $60k. Kind of disappointing.

Custom cars are always a harder sale because you gotta find more than one person (yourself) with equivalent taste. That’s still a lot of money for a coupe with no collectible value.

Well, It didn’t quite end as I’d hoped, but all is well. Another one off to the UK, almost went to Scotland Very Happy . Had a local guy that really wanted it, but it passed him by.

Thanks for watching, now get that popcorn grease off your keyboards! Very Happy
