Well, It didn’t quite end as I’d hoped, but all is well. Another one off to the UK, almost went to Scotland . Had a local guy that really wanted it, but it passed him by.
Thanks for watching, now get that popcorn grease off your keyboards! |
I, like others thought it would go for more. However you have to look at market prices over here in the UK and Europe to realise £33,346 is a very attractive price for a top flight Karmann Ghia. Whilst the price differential between the US and Europe continues so too will the exodus of quality KGs.
If the seller and the buyer are happy, all is good.

Not BaT, but a Hemmings auction for a 1970 coupe. Ends later today.

A 74 convertible is on BAT now, mediocre refresh, but solid and straight looking body.

I guess this one got by me or I turned of my notifications.
Judging by the VIN it looks like it could be one of the last 100 or so Ghia's built.
That alone makes it special.
It's certainly straight! _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

Yes, having an identical car I am watching this auction closely. As Lisa has noted on BaT it is #158 on ghiamanjc’s 74 database. Agree with all of the previous comments on condition. Currently at $15k. |

I'm confused as to what in the serial number would indicate this was one of the last ones made? This one would be one of the early 74's right?
The birth certificate says it was built on 15 Oct, 1973.
On 03/16/20, a Yellow 74 Vert sold on BAT. It has a SN of 1442667346 and was built in March of 74. _________________ Marc

Wow!! The 74 Ghia Vert sold for $24,250. That's a lot of money for a car that is a driver quality. I don't care how decent it is, it still needs a large investment to make it look squared away! _________________ Marc

I’ll say it again,
The price of entry is getting pricey for our cars.
I’m feeling fortunate that I bought my last one in the 90’s! _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

I looked on the Samba and there are two comparable condition convertibles and one is about $18k the other $20k I think. And they have been sitting for a while, but that’s the Samba for you. It’s not a good place to sell a Ghia because most VW people don’t care for them. There is more appreciation for Ghias amongst non VW people which is the BAT clientele. Thank goodness for that.
I did notice a lot of WTB ads though on the Samba for verts. Wonder why? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I definitely paid more than I should have 2 years ago, but going by the prices on BAT lately, maybe I didn't do so bad after all? _________________ Marc

I'm the opposite. The only air cooled VW's I've owned are Ghia's. The other models never interested me much. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

^ ^ Looks good overall though I also spot some " " with the body. Strong color; reminds me of the Tangerine '72 Ghia color. Nice to see traditional dual-throat carbs instead of just the single-throat ICTs when "Weber" is listed. I wonder what those square pipes are under the frame forks going back to the rear of the engine- maybe a special receiver for a hitch? Engine cold start video- why such a large hole in the rear engine tin at the left fresh air hose? |

I like the part on the repair invoice that says: "Traced problem with turn signal, replaced aggravating 4 way flasher switch"!
Boy, don't some of us know that feeling!!

In my BAT comment I said this was and "enthusiast" level restoration. So many things are done wrong.
It's just a dealer selling a car. I doubt they know much and won't be addressing many KG specific questions. A flipper for sure IMO.
Nice it has the rain gutter trims but cal look seals? Engine has no number. I guess that means its an aftermarket case? And why the underbody pics without the transmission installed
I just generally get a bad vibe. _________________ "Depression is a malfunction of the instrument we use to determine reality.”

It’s a typical BAT Ghia for sure. I look forward to the day where correctly and professionally done cars show up.
Anyway, the “cracked tunnel” discussion is interesting. I think it’s the sound insulation, I see you think it’s the tunnel itself. I’m not even sure how you could possibly crack a tunnel unless the car was dropped on top of a pyramid. There would have to be damage underneath but I don’t see any, plus I think what we are looking at is the sound insulation, the metal of the tunnel is not visible. _________________ Go Reds!
