Hello split bus people.
Finally I've fell into a good deal on a split window bus. I have had a few rusted out shells, but nothing that was nice enough or peaked my interest enough to fix the endless midwest rust!
A good friend and former bus owner sent me a Facebook marketplace ad almost two weeks ago. It only had one picture and the description shared very little information about the bus. It was also listed as the wrong year! With the price listed it appeared to be a scam. Somehow he got the guys phone number right away and sped off to look at it.
Long story short, he put a deposit down and passed the deal on to me for the price of one paint job on a vintage Triumph motorcycle! Thank you Joe!
I picked the bus up on the next day 😀
It runs (barely) and kind of stops! Lights and blinkers work too!
The interior was pitched but it still has the sconces and original headliner along with a few other westy bits 🙂
Its a walk-through and uncut dash! Delivery port was Chicago, IL.
The bus has been inside for approximately the last 10 years or maybe longer. PO bought it from a dealership in Iowa. The fuel smelled awful, but some how it fired up and stayed running long enough to get it on a trailer. The left rear cylinder was leaking terribly, so the brakes were almost non existent... still got it loaded safely on the trailer!
They still had all 5 jalousie windows with the bus so I put them back in place quick so the bus would stay "dry" if it rained.
1500 single port H0 code block. Engine is missing lots of stuff as far as tin and airflow are concerned... tons of holes to plug or make right!
More pics to come. _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

Thank you! This bus checks a lot of boxes for me, one being the color velvet green! I have wanted a green split or early bay for a long time!

Wow! Your bus look like a great builder! One of the best so42 colors IMO. Looking forward to watching this come together. _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

Is it a 66? Is it an A42 or a D42? _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

Phew, no expensive OG westy rack or big top tent on your parts collecting list! Although, those big top tents look real good against that velvet green! But then again, what doesn't look good against velvet green? _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

The tent would be so cool! I'm going to put a full length rack on it eventually. I've always wanted a tintop so I could finally do that.
I'm missing pretty much all of the interior. The panels inside are home made. I thought about just throwing a shitty bay interior in it and beating on it. I'd love to do the shasta snow trip some day, and I dont know if a restored westy with an original interior would belong on that trip?! I do have a few friends around me in the midwest that have a few pieces each of the interior so maybe I could make it happen. Lots to think about.
In the mean time I'm going to take it slow. I hope to have the rockers, outriggers, and lower bulk head fixed after the end of this winter. Register and drive it for the 2022 season. In the meantime I'll enjoy my 68 double cab. _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

Might want to consider so22/33 interior as per below. Nice thing about this style of interior is that it is fairly easy to remove if you want to use your camper as a kombi (for cargo hauling etc) or vice versa. Pain is of course storing the interior outside of bus when not in use

Thats awesome! I was just picturing some of the videos where they were doing stream crossings and wondering if your interior gets water logged at all? _________________ 1971 Chianti Red Westfalia x2

Great find and my favorite SO42 color. Since the interior is missing I wouldn't hesitate to cut a big hole in the roof and make it a Dormobile Westy with a full width bed setup. The room you get with that big popup roof is amazing.
Either way, enjoy it! _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

The rear engine tin is rare '66 only. It could be the original engine. |
