What's the story with the felt seal in the gland nut? Seems like this could get dislodged and foul the needle bearing upon installing the motor on the trans. Any advice other than lubing it up and hoping for the best?

It helps keep grease in the pilot bearing and dust/debris out. There's nothing special that needs done with it; just clean the end of the input shaft, grease the pilot bearing, and assemble.
