Just lower it more in the front and you won't have any issues...
Not sure if yours has the early or late pitman arm, and there may not be enough of difference to solve your issue, but worth looking into. |

I may suggest lifting the tank a bit. Temporary yes, but a quick fix. Possible modification on the bottom of tank may be in order. You may loose a quart of fuel capacity. This would allow you to keep the larger tie rods you love. Besides you were not overly happy with the paint and polish on the tank bottom. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

I'm inclined to shorten the pitman arm.
That would mean also shortening the arms on the spindles in order to maintain geometry.
Would only have to be a little bit, like 1/4" or so..
That's probably the best way to go about it. Keep in mind you'll want to cycle some turns while checking the clearance to the fittings.
Don't know if the new spindles you put on will allow you to shorten them up like the stock ones (2 thru bolts), so it might take more work like having to lay out the new tie rod end hole before cutting them.
As Tram would put it "oh the joy of custom things". _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for the thoughts, gentlemen.
Joel has me a tie rod on the way, so there's at least a temp fix in the works..
(buying a part i tossed - again.. )
First thing this morning, as i was pulling Damon's ramps out i just GOTS to know where the ride height ended up
(even though there was NO way I'm doing it again anytime soon).
Link
Maybe not rake.. But not dragging ass anymore.. We'll see with time.
Really happy about the smaller front tires.
Just to give an idea what it takes to jack this car up (or down)...
First, pray the welds hold and side-jack to get a couple 2x4s under.
Align (three or four times) the special bracket and pump the teeny-tiny-est strokes ever.
Use some broken tiles as shims, and align a few times as these come home.
Nice fit up front here, eh?
Notice required block of wood - otherwise the apron becomes the jack point.
Anyways, there was pretty much a whole day out there.
Not really sure just what all happened.
Got my door lock cylinders back from the locksmith -$100. Ouch.
Got some more brake fluid and a wrong breather filter.
Torqued the rear trailing arm brackets with weight on this time, thanks to Damon's ramps.
After a valve adjustment, i scratched the -shit- out of some cut\buffed valve covers trying to install them without scratching.
Smashed my finger real good having a KID help me bleed brakes.
Having him push hard to make sure fittings weren't oozing. Then checking to see if they spin free, it seemed like the pistons were sticking,
So i tried to turn the rotor hard.
He quit spacing out and i slammed my pinky in between the rotor and caliper SO hard..
It's getting bigger and bigger and bigger hours later.
He felt bad enough that he helped me scuff the rear trunk area, wipe it down and stab some MLV.
See also the prop rod i made out of some conduit.
Has rubber feet and will get painted black.
If you're going to have weak torsion springs and use a stupid prop,
Might as well be a shiny one.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Another long day out there yesterday..
Started in early on trying to get the rear trunk area ready to show.
Can't believe how many different kinds of insulation i have around here these days..
In front is what they sell at TMI, behind that is traditional thin carpet pad and next to that is RetroMat.
All of this stuff has the advantage of being light weight.
Then there's two different kinds of this; Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV).
Both the heavy/sticky squares here and also a big sheet of stiffer stuff.
Both of these are Heavy, adhesive backed, and black in color.
This stuff better help, because i really don't like just adding weight to the car like that.
Have just a square of similar crap stuck to the inside of the doors,
but here I'm a goanna line the whole 'powertrain compartment' with this heavy, gooey expensive stuff.
Sure as hell hope it helps.. Costs -and- weighs a ton.
Little brother helped me for a couple of hours trimming and gluing down scrap pieces of vinyl.
He also helped cut insulation and sandblasted and whatnot.
Warms my heart, because he's not really a car guy like his brother, just wants to be helpful.
Heart of Gold, this kid..
The factory glued these squares over the bolt holes, so i did the same.
Not really sure why..
See also hours of lying on my back in there with a rag soaked in wax/grease remover.
Years of sanding and buffing grit were everywhere up under there.
Big brother (sorta) helped trim the TMI thick foil stuff.
Had one piece left big enough to do the rear deck.
Because the engine hatch sits up 'proud' of the rest of the deck,
This thick stuff evened the whole rear area out.
He wasn't much help really.
Whined a lot until i gave up let him go and play video games all day (again)..
Ian the polisher finished a piece of sheet aluminum for me.
It woulda cost hundreds to have it shined to a mirror finish,
But this brushed, even scuff works well for a hunnert and a half or so.
Brightens things up..
Found a piece of c-channel seal used to trim the sunroof on a 944.
It meant i had to (carefully) take the perimeter of the aluminum piece down 1/8" or so for it to fit,
but it will finish off the underside of the hatch nicely methinks.
Unlike that heavy stainless piece tried before,
this one will get panel-bonded into place, so no fasteners will show.
Damon came around after lunch and gave me his whole afternoon.
Painted the parts that Theo blasted earlier.
Had some silver mixed up at the auto paint store to match the wiper arms.
See also jigs to hold everything for shooting.
Then, he dug in to scuffing with Scotch-brite, then wiping down with wax/grease remover, then some carb cleaner on a clean rag..
Strips of the gooey MLV where cut 1/2" wide and laid into the bottom of grooves,
Then more strips .800" wide went in over the top of those.
That fills all of the stamped grooves so anything going over them later lays flat.
Since this stuff is gooey and would follow the ribs, those ribs would show through the carpet.
So these little strips fill in the low areas.
Peeve of mine when you see the embossed ribs thru the carpet..
I spent the whole last day and a half on making this TMI rear trunk carpet "kit" work and fit.
Especially those rear wheel 'hump' covers - those were just pieces of carpet.
Not sure what you were supposed to do with them,
But i made several pie cuts to try and get them to sorta lie in place.
Hopefully those wrinkles from sitting folded in a box for years will settle out.
Think maybe lie it all on the sidewalk in the sun for a couple of days?
On the back deck..
Strips of MLV,
Whole squares of MLV,
Thick TMI foil carpet pad stuff,
Carpet
PITA working way up in there, and not really the best carpet job ever, but what's done is done.
What's done is done... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Steve , hate to say it, and it comes from personal experience... your trunk springs are in backwards... i did the same thing re-installed opposite from the way you have them there and now it is exactly like I remember it. some local guys who had some rotting original fasty's sent me pictures and sure as..shtuff they were backwards from the way you have them there.
if you'd like i'll try to get some pic's for you _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Dude..!
That is actually excellent news!
Would SO love to not have to use that stupid prop rod..
Decklid would (barely) stay open on it's own, until i put the license light on, then no way.
Always figured it had just too much Bondo and paint on it..
Hook a brother up!
I'd LOVE to have that thing working correctly.
Only a matter of time until the rod gets bumped and the lid comes crashing down... _________________ Bus Motor Build

Big assembly push continued over the last couple of days..
Taking a rubbing to make a template to trim hatch carpet.
Panel-bonding my decklid liner into place.
Using a steam iron to get wrinkles out of carpet.
Started in on assembling doors.
Got one done.
Getting down to the wire,
Only a couple more weeks to go! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Yes sir. I had installed it the same way clatter did before and I had the same issue you guys had.. after seeing some unmolested rust bucket pictures I found I had them backwards. This way the trunk lid actually stays up and works flawlessly.
Steve, there ya go... totally forgot about the Bently pictures. _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

WHooHooo!! VICTORY!!
Can't tell you how NOT stoked i was to struggle with that prop rod for the rest of my life with this car..
Something else that comes after doing things multiple times..
See the tool they use here in the Bible?
Just when i was all about to make one,
It came to me!
A tire iron for a motorcycle works just the same.
The little hook on the end is perfect.
Installing painted trim clips, adjusting doors, cleaning glue for a new decklid seal, sanding/polishing the rear emblem, under-rear-seat insulation...
On and on and on.. _________________ Bus Motor Build
