hi Everyone, I'm after another bit help!
As per the title I have a 1968 1200cc beetle which is 6 Volt.
I think I have a faulty fuel cut off valve as sometime fuel does not get through and the car wont start.
I'm after replacing this with a brass plug or something, can anyone advise what I can replace this with as finding a replacement for 6 Volt is impossible.
Cheers

Cut off valve on the carb? Does it make a clicking sound when you turn on the key? I guess you could just put a plug in there, but you may have issues with engine run-on then. _________________ 1968 Beetle (storage)

Hi There Yes, the fuel cut off on the carb. It 'clicks' sometimes hence why I think it's on it's way out. Do you know what brass plug I could use?
Cheers

I suppose you need this one : VW part number 111 129 413A
6 Volt I think, but to be sure you can ask the seller.

Thanks guys. It's a good forum here. I think i'll cut the plunger end off to start with.
Many thanks. |

My 68 1500 RHD doesn’t have a fuel cutoff as standard from the factory. Just leave it off.
I thought these fuel cutoffs were a US thing for emissions reductions so not relevant in most other jurisdictions. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

Not an emission device, or not directly and emission device.
In the late '60s VW added the idle cutoff solenoid as a solution to prevent engine run-on when the ignition switch was turned OFF. Often bypassing the idle cutoff solenoid results in the engine continuing to run for a few seconds after the ignition is turned OFF.
At the instant you turn the key to OFF, the engine's momentum allows the engine to continue to rotate as it slows down. While the engine is still rotating the charging system is producing current. This current can still make it back into the ignition circuit (15) via the GEN lamp. You often see this as the GEN lamp turning ON the instant you turn the key OFF. This current thru the GEN lamp has the ability to power the ignition coil to keep it firing the spark plug weakly. So even though the ignition switch is OFF the ignition coil continues to weakly spark and ignite the compressed charge in the cylinders.
To prevent this from continuing, VW added the idle cutoff solenoid to immediately cutoff fuel to the idle circuit. No fuel means the cylinders will not ignite even if there is spark. Compressed air alone does not ignite. _________________ AshMan40

I understand what “dieseling” is and what it is caused by. I’ve never had it happen in my original 68 which was NOT fitted with the cut off as standard equipment. All I’m saying is remove it and see what happens. _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

you can buy a new one from aliexpress for a few bucks (they are used on repro carbs), even if it ends up being c**p it's worth trying IMHO. _________________ cars:

When the car doesn't start as per usual, pull it off and see if the that remedies the situation. _________________ '69 Beetle

Not as simple as this.
Disconnecting the power from the solenoid will stop fuel flow thru/past it which means no fuel for the idle circuit.
Removing the solenoid and leaving the hole open creates a vacuum leak.
The common work around is to clip the end of the plunger off so the solenoid always allows fuel to flow. But this is a permanent change and cannot be un-done.
The less used option is to remove the solenoid and find a plug with the same sized threads. Since this is less used I've never heard of anyone posting the size of the threaded plug needed. I suppose you could take the solenoid out and take it with you to the hardware store and try different sized nuts and see which one threads onto the solenoid. Then purchase a plug with the same size thread. You will want to make use of a washer or o-ring to seal the plug so no fuel leaks out. Maybe Teflon/plumber's tape could work to seal the threads. _________________ AshMan40

Why make it difficult when it can be easy.
The idle cut-off valve in the link I gave is indeed a 6 Volt type and available.

Maybe you could install the threaded portion of the solenoid with the open
end sealed with a dab of silicone ! |
