Probably something of this style, but can get quite expensive.....
This style is also used on aviation air cooled engines....
I made one from a strip of 1-1/2 wide sheet metal and reinforced grip points to use with channel locks....

On the left is the genuine Hazet tool you’ll see in the manuals. It’s meant for getting into a tight spot between the studs, even just one cylinder like a field repair on the side of the road.
Each one is a fixed size so you need multiples if you use these.
I prefer this band clamp it fits all sizes, it’s cheap and simple to use in over 40 years it’s not failed me |

This is the Snap-On one that I use and it works great from everything air cooled to big block Chevy and Ford |

I have a no name copy.. cheap and does the job. Just oil the bands well and the pistons drop right in. _________________ Glenn

But you have to put piston into cylinder before inserting piston & pin onto rod...
Can see this style working on cast iron block engines but seems harder to work with on a aircooled... _________________ “Fear The Government That Wants To Take Your Guns" - Thomas Jefferson.

I have used wide worm clamps, VERY carefully torqued and oiled liberally. Make sure there are no burrs or sharp edges on the clamps if you do this. |

I use similar, just made by Total Seal.
You simply push the piston out far enough to slide the wrist pin in and install the clip. Much easier to me, but we all have our own techniques.

I kinda like the idea of Band Camp...errr... Band Clamp style. There are lots out there. What is the maximum height of the band that will allow you to slide the cylinder on far enough to get the rings inside the cylinder (from the bottom of the cylinder) then pull the band off? |

I was taught to use the band style clamp and for many years that is all I used. I watched somebody use the sleeve style tool and how simple and goof proof it was. Now the sleeve is all I use. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

I made a similar band clamp like this.
But I used metal crate banding I got from work. It was real expensive. $0.00! _________________ I have learned over the years.

(Thanks Dale.M for the picture)
the advantage of these is that you can extract the compression band from behind a cylinder. The only complaint is that you really have to make sure you've squeezed down enough, and they don't cover all of the rings completely, always a gap, you just have to be more careful about how everything lines up.
If money weren't an issue, I'd get those Jaycee type things, one for each size I use, but still keep the other for "special" occasions. |
