I have a 36hp that sings like a sewing machine. But I would like to narrow down the build month if possible. I know it's a pre-56. Thanks for any help you guys can lend.

… years ago (around 1977), I made a photocopy of a number chart, that I refer to, all the time - might be the best reference chart around - is 1949 to 1959 and includes chassis, engine, rear axle, front axle, frame and body numbers - musta' got it from a VW book, somewhere... way before the birth of thesamba …/

… anyway, your engine number 1248714 is a 1956 model 36 horse, made in 12/1955 - z

Wow, thanks. Just the info I needed. I got this motor from a good friends 1956 bug back in the 80's. I always thought it was the original engine from the car. I put it in my 1959 ragtop 20 years ago, it sat in my barn and never ran. Pulled it out a few months ago and it purrs like a kitten.

The stamping "1964" means it was probably rebuilt then, but not sure what the "A" represents or the upside down "2674". Could that mean it was rebuilt Feb 1974 as well?

Thanks again!

… I always thought the "A" was a rebuilt marking, but there was a fairly recent thread advising the "A" was not a rebuilt stamp - have fun - z

In the photo you can see the year 1964 is stamped. I wonder what the purpose was.

so, any idea how long from the time a block was stamped on the side of generator tower, until the time it was built? I assume the stamp was part of the mold, added after it was pulled from the mold or during the pouring of the mold? I assume they were quick to build the cases, but how quick a turnaround I wonder

My understanding is the A indicates it has the metal cam gear, as opposed to fiber.

I dont think VW rebuildt the old cases from before 1957 in 1964. In 57 the case was upgraded, better oil channels & stronger, eg around main bearing. My 8/55 (56 YM) got a factory refurbisged engine in 1964, the case is from 9/57. Still runs it today.
I have seen several factory refurbished 36hp engines through the years, but none with the old case.
