I always liked the 65-69 Corvairs. They remind me a lot of the Type 34 Ghia. When I had a Type 34, more than one person asked me if it was a Corvair, and were surprised when I told them it was a VW. _________________ 61 Bus, 71 Bus, 76 Beetle, 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth, 47 Plymouth Business Coupe, 58 BMW Isetta 300

Oh, howdy! The '60 is coming along. Runs, decent OP and compression despite the fact I really did not do that much engine work, just new ignition parts, oil and a new belt. Yesterday was the first day it started/ran with a key, and the controls all now work. Note the Playskool/Fisher-Price/Barbie's My First Car tires on 13" wheels any small dog could wear as a hat. Brakes are done thanks to an infusion of NOS parts from swell individuals across the continent.
Took awhile 'cause I was working on other folks' derelict vehicles. This handsome brute hit the road this August after arriving looking like it was yanked from a dumpster out behind World Demolition Derby Headquarters. Like the Corvair it came to me w/o floors. Must be a Chevy thing, losing floors in the desert. Surprisingly comfy and pleasant vehicle.
At least one other kitchen engine, this is a '56 Ford 272 Y-Block, looks stock but is Funster inside, shaved, balanced, Isky cam, sneaky head mods, etc.
I'm 109% certain Corvair will require work until I'm dead; like all VWs it leaves a breadcrumb trail that vanishes only when everything's repaired and the wallet's empty. Corvair flywheels for instance are these weird two-piece things riveted together. Eventually the rivets get loose and noise, chaos and anarchy ensue. Clutch disks are 'spensive too, and the pressure plates are enormous and carry the starter gear teeth. Also it needs a steering box rebuild or to have the present unit shot into space. Except for the big whiskey dent, I may leave that for a future generation to resolve.
Be glad you favor VWs as the parts are way, way, way easier to locate and afford. |

They are ok but I’m not a fan of most GM things. Though I would rate a Corvair higher than anything made today because anything made today I don’t even consider a car anymore. |

I've thought Corvair's were neat cars. Not Karmann Ghia neat but interesting none the less.
Richard Lentinello, formerly a Hemming Motor News Editor recently published his book on Corvair's. He obviously a fan.

I just bought that book recently. If you like Corvairs, you will definitely enjoy the book. Just don't spill some water on the cover like I did; it will melt the ink before your eyes!

This Spring I'm going to try & dig this ^^^^ '61 Rampside out & drag it home, hope is doesn't split in half
It will be free, just the cost/time to get it home, I'm going to park it in my field as yard art if it's too rusty to save. _________________ Tom

those of us who live on back roads do something to distinguish our mail box posts. orange over blue over red reflector, an auger as a post, a guy in Kansas has a BD5 mounted on a pole. makes it easier for delivery people to find the house.
that Greenbriar would be excellent as a driveway gate guard.
"just turn east at the Greenbriar"

My place is easy to find, the only house on the left on our 1/2 mile long, dead end road. Wife prefers the non-driver cars/trucks up in the back field, where only one lucky neighbor will get to see this every day:

Still kicking my asp for selling it but hard times tend to dictate... and it was a toy. |

The idea is to move the time of incidence up a peg or two. The Pontiac Tempest (1961-1963) engine in front and transaxle in rear, which uses a modified to their own specification G.M. transaxle moved that incidence event up by simply equipping their cars with 15" wheels instead of 13" wheels.. A lot harder to tuck and roll one of those cars. Porsche knew about this as well, that's why the early beetle and early Porsche were designed with 16" wheels. Then the bean counters started attacking. |

One of my co-workers had one of those. Convertible 4cylinder model, needed a resto (mostly electrical work), and it was that ugly GM green color too (puke green). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Actually I forgot to mention that the 63 Tempest/Lemans has a revised trailing arm and double jointed axles on the transaxle IRS , one year before Corvair and 5 years before 68A/T beetle and 6years before M/T beetles. 61-62 Tempest are swing axle. |

Well it finally happened. After looking for two years and then giving up, a 1965 Monza Coupe is in my back yard. No it is not exactly mint, but then I paid the grand total of nothing for it! A good friend of mine knew I wanted one, and he quietly tracked this down, acquired it, loaded it on his trailer, dropped it off in my yard, and happily GAVE it to me!!!
This has literally been the only Corvair for sale locally to me in over a year. Thought I missed out, but was in fact surprised. And an even cooler surprise was to come...
I fell in love with Corvairs 33 years ago when my best friend was looking for his first car. We cruised the local used car lots in my '70 Beetle to see if we could find something good. We once had a used car lot called "Beater World" (really!) in town, and the best car on the lot was a '65 Corvair Monza in fresh gold paint. I loved it, my buddy loved it, but it was WAAAAY out of both of our price ranges. Never forgot that car, and always hoped to find one just like it...
And amazingly enough, the car I now own is not only just like the one from three decades ago, it is actually the EXACT same car! How cool is that? I actually ended up with my ultimate dream Corvair after all these years. It will most certainly now one way or another get the restoration it deserves. Despite sitting outside for years, the condition is not that bad for this area, and the underneath structure is excellent. The outer panels are another story, but they are fixable. You have no idea how excited I am to own this specific car and work will begin soon.
Shown parked next to that same '70 Beetle previous mentioned. Both cars where last on the road in 2001, and I have owned the Beetle for 36 years now. Unfortunately the Beetle is far too structural rotten to restore including massive Death Foam issues. The Corvair however is solid where it counts, and that makes me quite pleased... I hear Chevrolet is going to Re-do the trip through the Darien Gap, maybe you could join them? Just kidding !
I had a 2.7 in my 70 Crewcab, it ran well pit loved to flip fan belts. Luckily Clarks has an extensive Catalog of parts and an active owners group through "Corsa"
A new project is always exciting.
