|
|
While assembling my lower end with a new AS41 case, and threading in the oil pump studs (which were ridiculously tight--had to double nut them and use a ratchet), I foolishly expected the resistance when the studs bottomed out to be obvious. It was not, and on two of the four studs I punched through the case. I was surprised there is only about 1.5 mm of metal behind those.
The metal debris was easy to extract, and I feel like there is nothing I need to be worried about here because the oil pump nuts will be well sealed with Permatex 3H and o-rings once the pump is on, plus Permatex and a paper gasket at each junction. But I thought I'd poll the experts here. Do I need to seal the back side of the stud up, perhaps with JB weld? I don't have the ability to magnesium weld.
Thanks! _________________ 1976 Convertible Super Beetle, "June Bug".

If the studs were that tight I don't think any oil will get past them since it will only be splash not pressure and no JB inside the case. |

I'm thinking that I'd use blue or red Loctite sealer on those threads.
And if you use 8mm x 1.25mm bolts, we won't tell. The CB Maxi2 pump/filter comes with allen head bolts; have those on both my VWs.

I hope you take away a lesson from this, if the fastener is putting up that much of a fight it may be time to find out why before cramming it in.
As already mentioned it's not likely to leak so carry on. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Most VW cases the threaded holes for the oil pump go through to the gear area, they are not blind holes.
I have seen some newer cases have blind holes.
So, I guess you have converted it back to original.
Use thread sealant on the nuts to prevent leaks. |

It was putting up that much fight from the first few threads. I probably needed to retap it to clean up the threads--that is what I learned. _________________ 1976 Convertible Super Beetle, "June Bug".

If you put on some gloves and hold the stud (end going in case) against a piece of dry ice for 1 min. it will screw right in. |

That’s a neat trick. Could probably accomplish the same thing by tossing the studs in the freezer for a bit. Since most of us probably don’t keep dry ice on hand. _________________ 1976 Convertible Super Beetle, "June Bug".
